Licensing Exam

A licensing exam is the test a state agency or approved program requires before you can work in a regulated job. This hub covers free practice for the real estate exam in five states, food handler cards, ServSafe Manager, OSHA 10 and 30, and the CDL knowledge test, with official formats and pass marks.

Real Estate Licensing Exams

The real estate exam is set by each state’s real estate commission and delivered by a testing company such as Pearson VUE or PSI. Most states test general real estate principles plus state license law, and you take the exam after completing the state’s required prelicensing education. Every licensing exam on this hub has a guide and a free practice test.

National Real Estate Practice Exam

The national portion covers property ownership, land use, valuation, financing, agency, contracts, transfer of title and real estate math. In Pearson VUE states it has 80 scored items and 5 unscored pretest items. Our real estate practice exam is a national real estate practice exam with real estate practice questions and answers drawn at random, so every attempt is different.

Free Real Estate Practice Exams by State

State pages add the state-law portion to the national questions. Each one is a real estate practice exam for free with the state’s own format and pass mark:

Food Safety Exams

The food handlers test and the ServSafe Manager exam are the two food safety exams most restaurant workers meet. A food handler card covers basic hygiene and temperature control for frontline staff, while a food protection manager certification is a proctored exam for the person in charge.

Food Handlers Test Practice

The ServSafe Food Handler assessment has 40 questions with a 75% pass mark, and it is not proctored or timed; the California version requires 70%. Our food handlers practice test uses questions for food handlers test topics such as handwashing, cross-contamination, allergens and the temperature danger zone.

ServSafe Food Manager Exam

The ServSafe Food Protection Manager exam has 90 questions, 80 of them scored, with 2 hours to finish. ServSafe sets the pass mark at 75%, which means at least 60 correct scored answers. The ServSafe practice test is a servsafe practice test exam with servsafe practice test and answers explained for every question.

Food Handlers vs ServSafe

Food handlers vs ServSafe is really a question of role. A food handlers certificate vs ServSafe Manager certification compares a short, unproctored course for any employee with a proctored exam for supervisors.

Food Handler Certificate ServSafe Food Protection Manager
Who needs it Frontline food workers Managers and persons in charge
Questions 40 (ServSafe Food Handler) 90 (80 scored)
Pass mark 75% (70% in California) 75%
Proctored No Yes
Valid for 3 years (ServSafe) 5 years

OSHA 10 and 30 Outreach Tests

The OSHA 10 and 30 courses are voluntary safety training from the OSHA Outreach Training Program, not a licensing exam in the strict sense. You earn a completion card from an authorized trainer, and any test is set by that trainer rather than by OSHA. Our OSHA practice test guide explains the program, and the OSHA 10 practice test works as an OSHA 10 and 30 practice test on hazard recognition, PPE and worker rights.

Which OSHA 30 Do I Need

The OSHA 30 you need depends on your industry: construction workers take the construction course and most other workplaces take general industry. The Outreach program also offers maritime and disaster site courses. If your employer or a job site requires a card, ask which industry version they accept before enrolling.

CDL Permit and Knowledge Tests

The CDL test starts with written knowledge tests at your state licensing agency. Every applicant takes general knowledge, and you add tests for the class and endorsements you need. Pass them to get a commercial learner’s permit, which you hold for 14 days and combine with Entry-Level Driver Training before the skills test.

Our CDL practice test is an online CDL practice test and a CDL practice test for permit preparation, with CDL practice test questions and answers that use the federal 80% pass mark.

Air Brakes, Combination and Endorsement Tests

The air brakes test is needed to drive a vehicle with air brakes; scoring below 80% leads to an air brake restriction on your license. The combination vehicles test is required for Class A, and endorsement tests cover hazmat, tanker, passenger, school bus and doubles/triples.

Tools for Licensing Exams

These free tools work like a real estate practice exam app in your browser: schedule your study, count down to test day and drill the facts you keep missing.

The study planner for exams builds a weekly plan with practice-test weeks, the exam countdown creates a shareable countdown, and you can make flashcards online for temperatures, real estate math formulas or CDL inspection steps.

How Hard Are Licensing Exams

Licensing exams range from short and approachable to long and technical. Is the real estate exam hard? It is the toughest exam on this hub: state law questions are detailed, and Texas reports first-time pass rates of 71% on the national portion and 63% on the state portion (December 2022 to February 2023).

Is the Food Handlers Test Hard

The food handlers test is one of the easiest licensing exams because it covers basic food safety for frontline staff. Most failures come from guessing temperatures and holding times, so learn those numbers before you start.

Is the CDL Written Test Hard

The CDL written test is moderately hard because the bar is high: 80% on every knowledge test. Air brakes questions are the most technical, so study that section of your state manual closely.

How Hard Is the OSHA 30 Test

The OSHA 30 test is usually not hard, because the course teaches the material just before the quizzes and OSHA sets no national pass mark. The challenge is the time commitment: a 30-hour class takes at least four days.

How Many Questions Are on Each Licensing Exam

The number of questions depends on the exam and, for real estate, on the state. Here is how many real estate exam questions and other licensing questions to expect:

Exam Questions
Real estate, Pearson VUE national portion 80 scored + 5 pretest
Real estate, Florida 100
Real estate, California 150
ServSafe Food Handler 40
ServSafe Food Protection Manager 90 (80 scored)
CDL knowledge test At least 30 per test

Food Handlers Test Questions

The ServSafe Food Handler assessment has 40 questions. Other food handler programs set their own length, so check the course you are taking.

ServSafe Test Questions

The ServSafe Food Protection Manager exam has 90 questions: 80 are scored and 10 are unscored pilot questions.

CDL Permit Test Questions

Federal rules require at least 30 items on each CDL knowledge test, and states set the exact number. Endorsement tests are separate.

Can You Take Licensing Exams Online

Some licensing exams can be taken online and others cannot. Food handler courses and OSHA Outreach classes are widely available online, ServSafe Manager offers online proctoring, and real estate and CDL knowledge tests are normally taken in person at a test center or licensing office.

Food Handlers Test Online

Yes, you can take the food handlers test online. The ServSafe Food Handler program is an online course and assessment, and many accredited programs work the same way, though some jurisdictions accept only specific providers.

Can OSHA 30 Be Done Online

Yes, OSHA 30 can be done online, but only through an OSHA-authorized online provider. Online classes follow the same rules as in-person ones: no more than 7.5 hours per day and completion within 180 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the ServSafe Test Hard?

The ServSafe Manager exam is moderately hard because it is proctored and tests specific temperatures, times and procedures. It has 90 questions, 80 of them scored, in 2 hours, and the ServSafe FAQ sets the pass mark at 75%. Candidates who memorise the cooking, holding and cooling temperatures usually find the rest manageable.

How Many Real Estate Exams Are There?

There is no single national real estate exam: each state runs its own licensing exam, and most have separate salesperson and broker exams. In Pearson VUE states such as Pennsylvania and Texas, the salesperson exam has a national portion and a state portion that you pass separately. Florida and California use a single state exam.

How Many ServSafe Tests Are There?

ServSafe offers several programs, and the two most people need are the ServSafe Food Handler assessment for frontline workers and the ServSafe Food Protection Manager exam for managers. ServSafe also has separate programs for alcohol service and food allergens. Check which one your employer or local health department requires before you register.

Is the OSHA 30 Test Multiple Choice?

OSHA itself sets no exam for the 30-hour course, and testing is optional under OSHA Outreach Training Program rules. Where a trainer or OSHA-authorized online provider does give a test, it is usually a set of multiple-choice quizzes and a final assessment written by that provider. Your trainer explains the format at the start.

Are CDL Tests the Same in Every State?

CDL tests are not identical, but every state builds them to the same federal FMCSA standards. Each knowledge test has at least 30 items and you need at least 80% correct on every test nationwide. States write their own questions and set the exact length, so use your state’s CDL manual alongside general practice.

Does a Food Handlers Certificate Expire?

Yes, a food handlers certificate usually expires. A ServSafe Food Handler certificate is valid for 3 years, although local rules may differ. A ServSafe Food Protection Manager certification lasts 5 years, unless your state or local health department requires earlier recertification, so check your jurisdiction.

Is the Real Estate Exam Multiple Choice?

Yes, real estate licensing exams are multiple choice. Florida’s sales associate exam has 100 multiple-choice questions and California’s salesperson exam has 150. In Pearson VUE states, the national portion has 80 scored items plus 5 unscored pretest items, and a separate state-law portion follows.
