IELTS Band Score Calculator

This IELTS band score calculator works online with no sign-up and follows the scoring rules the IELTS partners publish. It is designed for practice tests: score your Listening and Reading answer sheets, estimate your Writing and Speaking bands, and see the overall band you would get.

How to Use the IELTS Band Score Calculator Overall

Fill in five fields and read your overall band at the top of the results. Each skill band is shown underneath, so you can see which one is pulling your average down.

  1. Enter your Listening correct answers (0–40).
  2. Enter your Reading correct answers (0–40) and choose Academic or General Training.
  3. Select your Writing band and your Speaking band (0–9 in half bands).
  4. Read your overall band and the four skill bands.

If you need raw scores to enter, take our free IELTS practice test first.

Listening Band

The Listening field converts your raw score with the IELTS Listening table, which is the same for Academic and General Training. As an IELTS band score calculator for listening, it shows, for example, that 30 correct answers is band 7.0.

Reading Band

Reading uses a separate table for each module, so always set the module before you read the result. If your raw score is below the lowest published row, the calculator shows “Below 4” and does not calculate an overall band.

Writing Band

Writing is marked by examiners, so enter the band you received or an honest estimate. If a teacher marked your two tasks separately, remember that Task 2 counts for more than Task 1 in the Writing band.

Speaking Band

Speaking is also examiner-marked. Select your band from the list, which runs from 0 to 9 in half bands. The calculator treats it exactly like the other three skills when it works out the average.

How Overall IELTS Band Score Is Calculated

The overall band is the mean of your four skill bands, rounded to the nearest half band. IELTS adds one special rule: an average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band, and an average ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band.

Four skill bands Average Overall band
6.5, 6.5, 5.5, 6.0 6.125 6.0
6.5, 6.5, 5.5, 7.0 6.375 6.5
7.0, 6.5, 6.5, 6.0 6.5 6.5
7.0, 7.0, 6.5, 6.5 6.75 7.0
6.0, 6.0, 6.0, 7.0 6.25 6.5

IELTS Raw Score to Band Score Calculator

Listening and Reading use the indicative raw-score tables published by IELTS. The calculator uses the lowest raw score for each band shown below. IELTS notes that exact conversions can vary slightly between test versions, so a band on the boundary could differ by half a band on test day.

Band Listening (of 40) Academic Reading (of 40) General Training Reading (of 40)
9.0 39–40 39–40 40
8.5 37–38 37–38 39
8.0 35–36 35–36 37–38
7.5 32–34 33–34 36
7.0 30–31 30–32 34–35
6.5 26–29 27–29 32–33
6.0 23–25 23–26 30–31
5.5 18–22 19–22 27–29

IELTS Average Band Score Calculator

Used as an IELTS average band score calculator, the tool shows how much one skill matters. Raising a single skill by one full band raises the average by 0.25, which is often exactly what is needed to cross a rounding boundary. That is why improving your weakest skill is usually the fastest route to a higher overall band.

IELTS Band Score Calculator Academic vs General

Academic and General Training share the same Listening and Speaking tests and the same band scale. They differ in Reading and Writing, and only Reading changes how raw scores are converted, so the module selector affects the Reading band alone.

IELTS Band Score Calculator General

For General Training, the Reading table asks for more correct answers at each band. Band 6.0 needs 30 correct, compared with 23 in Academic Reading. Choose “General Training” in the module menu to use this table.

IELTS Band Score Calculator for Academic Reading

Academic Reading is the default setting. Its texts are longer and more academic, so the table is more generous: 30 correct answers gives band 7.0. Use this setting for university and professional registration applications that require IELTS Academic.

IELTS Band Score Descriptors

Writing and Speaking bands come from the public band descriptors, which examiners use to mark four criteria with equal weight. In Writing these are Task Achievement (Task Response for Task 2), Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. In Speaking they are Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation.

IELTS Writing Task 2 Band Score Calculator

To estimate a Task 2 band, score your essay against each of the four criteria and average them. Then combine it with your Task 1 band, giving Task 2 more weight, because IELTS counts it twice as much as Task 1. Enter the result in the Writing field to see its effect on your overall band, and read the official descriptors on the IELTS guide’s source links before you self-mark.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is the Average Band Score for IELTS?

There is no single target average, because it depends on the test version, the country and the year. IELTS publishes test taker performance data by module and nationality if you want the official means. What matters more is the band your university, employer or immigration program requires, which is usually stated as an overall band plus a minimum in each skill.

How Is the IELTS Band Score Calculated?

Each of the four skills gets a band from 0 to 9. Listening and Reading bands come from your raw score out of 40, and Writing and Speaking bands come from examiners using the public band descriptors. The overall band is the average of the four, rounded to the nearest half band, with .25 rounding up to .5 and .75 rounding up to the next whole band.

How Is the IELTS Band Score Calculated in Reading?

Your Reading band is based on how many of the 40 questions you answer correctly. Academic and General Training use different conversion tables: General Training needs more correct answers for the same band because its texts are less demanding. For example, 30 correct is band 7 in Academic Reading but band 6 in General Training Reading.

How Does the IELTS Band Score Calculator Work?

The calculator looks up your Listening and Reading raw scores in the indicative IELTS tables, takes the Writing and Speaking bands you select, averages all four and rounds the result with the official IELTS rule. Change any input and the overall band updates immediately.
