How Our IELTS Practice Test Works

Our IELTS practice test draws questions at random from an original bank covering all four IELTS skills: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Each set includes questions from every section in proportion to the bank, so every attempt is different.

Choose a mode before you start. Timed mode gives you 40 minutes for 30 questions, untimed mode removes the clock, and study mode lets you check each answer and read the explanation straight away. You can also choose 10 questions, 30 questions or the whole bank.

At the end you see your score, your percentage, the time you used and a breakdown by section. The answer review shows every question with your answer, the correct answer, an explanation and a “why” note on the rule or strategy behind it.

IELTS Practice Test Free, No Login

This IELTS practice test is free, with no login, no email and no download. It runs in any modern browser. If you close the page halfway through, your unfinished test is saved on your device so you can resume it, and your last ten results are kept so you can see your progress.

IELTS Practice Test Online Free With Score

You get your score the moment you submit: correct answers, percentage and a section-by-section breakdown. Use the breakdown to decide what to study next. For example, a strong Reading score with a weak Listening score tells you to spend your next sessions on Listening task types.

Computer Based IELTS Practice Test Mode

The test works like computer-delivered IELTS: you read on screen, select answers, flag questions to come back to and move freely with the question navigator. Keyboard shortcuts let you answer with the number keys. This makes it a useful IELTS practice test for computer based candidates who want to get used to reading and answering on a screen.

How Long Is the IELTS Practice Test?

A 30-question set takes 40 minutes in timed mode, which is about 80 seconds per question. A 10-question set takes about 13 minutes. Untimed and study modes have no limit. The real IELTS takes about 2 hours 45 minutes, so this practice test is built for short, frequent sessions rather than a full simulation.

What the Real IELTS Exam Covers

The real IELTS has four tests: Listening (40 questions, about 30 minutes), Reading (40 questions, 60 minutes), Writing (2 tasks, 60 minutes) and Speaking (3 parts, 11–14 minutes). Our bank follows the same four sections, and the notes below explain how we practice each one in a browser.

IELTS Practice Test for Listening

The real Listening test has four recorded parts, from an everyday conversation to an academic lecture. Our practice test has no audio: each Listening question gives you a written transcript of a recording, then asks a question in an IELTS task type such as form completion, multiple choice, map labeling or note completion.

This trains the skills Listening rewards — catching corrected details, spelling names and spotting distractors — but it is not a substitute for hearing real recordings. Add official IELTS audio samples to your preparation, and use the transcripts here to understand why answers are right or wrong.

IELTS Practice Test for Reading

Reading questions use original passages with IELTS task types, including True / False / Not Given, matching headings, sentence completion, multiple choice and the writer’s purpose. True / False / Not Given has the most questions in our bank because it is where candidates lose the most marks.

Reading IELTS Practice Test Academic

Most of our Reading passages are written in the style of IELTS Academic texts: factual, dense and organized around an argument. A reading IELTS practice test with answers in this style builds the skimming and scanning you need for three long passages in 60 minutes.

IELTS Practice Test Writing Task 1

The real Writing test asks you to write two responses, which a browser quiz cannot mark fairly. Instead, our Writing questions are multiple-choice skill items. For Task 1 they test overviews, describing trends, comparisons, approximation, process description and staying objective. For Task 2 they test thesis statements, topic sentences, cohesive devices, collocation and conclusions.

Each item shows you what a higher-band choice looks like and explains why. Use them alongside timed essay writing of your own.

IELTS Practice Test Speaking

The real Speaking test is a face-to-face interview. Our Speaking questions are multiple-choice items about how the test works and what examiners reward: extending Part 1 answers, planning a Part 2 talk, developing Part 3 ideas, discourse markers, paraphrase, pronunciation and why memorized answers hurt your score.

General Training IELTS Practice Test

Listening and Speaking are the same in IELTS Academic and General Training, so those questions apply to everyone. General Training Reading uses everyday and workplace texts, and Writing Task 1 is a letter. Our Writing Task 2 and Reading strategy questions still apply, but add letter-writing practice if you are taking General Training.

IELTS Practice Test Scoring Explained

IELTS has no pass mark: the real test reports band scores from 0 to 9, and each organization sets the band it accepts. Our practice test reports a percentage instead and uses a 70% readiness benchmark, labeled as a benchmark on the results screen.

The percentage is not an IELTS band. To work out a band from section bands, use the IELTS band score calculator; to compare a TOEFL score, use the TOEFL to IELTS conversion. Treat your practice percentage as a guide to which sections need work.

IELTS Practice Test With Answers

Every question comes with answers you can learn from. The review shows the correct answer, an explanation and a “why” note for each item, so you understand the reasoning, not just the key. Read the explanations for questions you got right too, to make sure you chose them for the right reason.

Tips to Pass: How to Take an IELTS Practice Test

Take an IELTS practice test the way you will take the real one: timed, without interruptions and with a review afterward. Then act on the results.

  1. Start with one untimed set in study mode to learn the question types.
  2. Switch to timed mode and take a 30-question set once or twice a week.
  3. After each attempt, list the task types you missed and review them before your next set.
  4. Plan weekly sessions with the study planner for exams and track your date with the exam countdown timer.
  5. Put new vocabulary and collocations into a deck — you can make flashcards online and review them daily.

IELTS Practice Test for Speaking at Home

Our Speaking items teach what examiners listen for, but you also need to speak. At home, set a timer, read a Part 2 task card, prepare for one minute and talk for two minutes while recording yourself. Listen back for long pauses, repeated words and whether you answered every point on the card.

Are IELTS Practice Tests Harder?

Practice tests are not designed to be harder than IELTS, but they can feel harder or easier depending on the source. Ours focuses on the task types candidates find most difficult, so your score may be lower than your general level suggests. What matters is the trend across several attempts, not a single result.
