How to Use the TOEFL Score Converter
The TOEFL score converter works in both directions. Pick a direction, enter one score and read the comparable score above the table, where your row is also highlighted.
- Choose “TOEFL → IELTS” or “IELTS → TOEFL”.
- For TOEFL → IELTS, enter your TOEFL iBT total from 0 to 120. For IELTS → TOEFL, choose an overall band from 4.0 to 9.0.
- Read the comparable score and check the highlighted row in the comparison table.
If you took the TOEFL iBT from January 21, 2026 onward, your main score is on a 1–6 band scale. ETS also prints a comparable 0–120 score on score reports until January 2028, so enter that number. Need a score to convert? Our free TOEFL practice test covers all four sections.
How the TOEFL Score Calculator Converts Scores
The converter uses the comparison table ETS publishes for TOEFL iBT and IELTS, which is based on an ETS linking study. Each IELTS band corresponds to a range of TOEFL iBT totals, so the tool simply finds the range your score falls in. In the other direction it shows the full TOEFL range for the band you choose, rounding an in-between band down to the nearest half band.
This is a comparison, not an official conversion. Universities, employers and governments set their own minimum scores for each test, and some publish equivalence tables that differ from ETS’s. Always check the requirement the receiving organization states.
IELTS Score and Band Equivalents
This is the table the converter uses. Find your TOEFL iBT total in the right-hand column to see the comparable IELTS band.

A TOEFL score of 94 to 101 is therefore comparable to IELTS 7.0, and a total of 79 to 93 to IELTS 6.5. The ranges are wide in the middle of the scale, so two people with the same IELTS band can have TOEFL totals 15 points apart.
The converter does not translate the new 1–6 TOEFL band directly. ETS aligns the 1–6 scale with CEFR levels rather than with IELTS bands, so the safest comparison during the transition is the 0–120 score ETS reports alongside it. Format details for the updated test are in our TOEFL guide.
IELTS Band Score in Each Module
IELTS reports a band score in each module as well as the overall band, and many institutions set a minimum for each skill, such as an overall 6.5 with no band below 6.0. The converter compares overall scores only, because the ETS table above is for the TOEFL total and the IELTS overall band.

The converter does not include PTE scores. Pearson publishes its own concordance between PTE Academic and IELTS, and it has revised that concordance over time, so use Pearson’s current table rather than a third-party PTE score to IELTS band calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Is the Average Band Score for IELTS?
IELTS does not set a target average, and the mean score varies by module, country and year; IELTS publishes test taker performance data if you want the official figures. For applications, the number that matters is the band your institution asks for. Use the converter to see which TOEFL iBT range corresponds to that band.
How Is the IELTS Band Score Calculated?
IELTS gives a band from 0 to 9 for Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Listening and Reading bands come from raw scores out of 40, and Writing and Speaking are examiner-marked. The overall band is the average of the four, rounded to the nearest half band, and our IELTS score calculator does that arithmetic for you.
How Is the Overall IELTS Band Score Calculated?
Add the four skill bands, divide by four and round to the nearest half band. An average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band and one ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band, so 6.25 becomes 6.5 and 6.75 becomes 7.0. Averages ending in .125 or .375 round to the nearest half band as usual.
