What Is the PTE Exam?

The PTE exam is a computer-based English test from Pearson that measures speaking, writing, reading and listening in a single sitting of about 2 hours. The version most people take, PTE Academic, is used for university admission, professional registration and visa applications.

Results are reported on a 10–90 scale linked to the Global Scale of English. There is no pass mark; each university or immigration authority sets the score it requires.

What Does PTE Stand For?

PTE stands for Pearson Test of English. “PTE Academic” is the full name of the main test, and Pearson also offers other PTE tests for specific purposes, such as PTE Core for some migration routes. When universities ask for a “PTE score,” they mean PTE Academic.

Is PTE an English Proficiency Test?

Yes. PTE Academic is an English proficiency test, in the same category as IELTS, the TOEFL and the Duolingo English Test. Our overview of every English proficiency test shows how they differ in format, length and scoring.

PTE Exam Format: How Many Questions Are in the PTE Exam

The PTE exam has 65–75 questions across 22 question types, taken in three parts in one session of about 2 hours. The exact number of questions varies from test to test.

Part Main question types Time
Part 1: Speaking & Writing Personal introduction, Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, Retell Lecture, Summarize Written Text, Write Essay and more About 76–84 minutes
Part 2: Reading Reading & Writing Fill in the Blanks, Multiple Choice, Reorder Paragraphs, Reading Fill in the Blanks About 23–30 minutes
Part 3: Listening Summarize Spoken Text, Multiple Choice, Fill in the Blanks, Highlight Incorrect Words, Write From Dictation About 31–39 minutes

Many PTE question types are integrated: one task can count toward two skills. For example, Repeat Sentence contributes to both listening and speaking.

PTE Speaking

PTE speaking tasks are recorded through a headset microphone. They include Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, Retell Lecture, Answer Short Question and, since the August 2025 update, Respond to a Situation and Summarize Group Discussion. Responses are scored for content, oral fluency and pronunciation.

Each speaking task has a short preparation time and a fixed recording window. A PTE mock test for speaking should train you to start promptly and keep speaking smoothly, because long pauses can end the recording.

PTE Writing

PTE writing tasks are Summarize Written Text, where you write a one-sentence summary of a passage, and Write Essay, a short argumentative essay. Both are scored for content, form, grammar and vocabulary, and the essay also for structure and development.

A PTE mock test for writing should include timed essays and one-sentence summaries, because both have strict word limits. Writing too much or too little can cost points for form.

PTE Reading

PTE Reading has five question types: Reading & Writing Fill in the Blanks, Multiple Choice (single and multiple answers), Reorder Paragraphs and Reading Fill in the Blanks. Fill-in-the-blank tasks reward strong knowledge of collocations and grammar, while Reorder Paragraphs tests how ideas connect.

PTE Listening: Write From Dictation

Write From Dictation asks you to listen to a short sentence and type it exactly. It is one of the most valuable Listening tasks because it contributes to both listening and writing scores. PTE practice for write from dictation should focus on accurate spelling, plural endings and small words like articles and prepositions.

Other listening tasks include Summarize Spoken Text, Multiple Choice, Fill in the Blanks, Highlight Correct Summary, Select Missing Word and Highlight Incorrect Words.

PTE Scoring: How the PTE Is Calculated

The PTE is scored from 10 to 90 on the Global Scale of English, with an overall score and four communicative skill scores: Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening. Responses are scored mainly by Pearson’s automated scoring technology.

Because many tasks are integrated, one response can contribute to more than one skill score. Some tasks are scored right or wrong, while others give partial credit, and some multiple-answer items deduct marks for wrong choices. Your overall score is based on performance across the whole test rather than a simple average of the four skill scores.

Most test takers get their PTE Academic results within two business days, according to Pearson. PTE scores are valid for 2 years from the test date, though some institutions set shorter or longer periods. Pearson publishes its own concordance between PTE and IELTS scores, and for TOEFL comparisons you can use our TOEFL to IELTS score converter; always check each institution’s own requirements.

How Many Marks for the PTE Exam?

The maximum PTE mark is 90 and the minimum is 10, both for the overall score and for each communicative skill. There is no pass or fail. Universities and immigration programs publish their own minimums, often with a minimum for each skill.

PTE Registration and Fees in the USA

You register for the PTE exam in the USA through the official Pearson PTE website: create an account, choose PTE Academic, pick a test center and date and pay online. Use the same name as on your ID when you register.

Pearson sets the PTE test price in the USA and other countries, so check the current fee on the official PTE Academic page before you book. Rescheduling and cancellation rules depend on how much notice you give.

PTE Test Location

PTE is taken at Pearson-authorized test centers. During booking, search by city or ZIP code to see the nearest PTE test location and available appointments. Choose a center you can reach easily, because late arrival may mean you cannot sit the test.

How Many Times Can You Take the PTE Exam?

Pearson does not set an overall limit on how many times you can take the PTE exam, so you can retake it until you reach your target score. Check the official booking rules for how soon you can book your next attempt, and pay for each test separately.

How to Prepare for the PTE Exam

The best way to prepare for the PTE exam is to master each of the 22 question types, because the format is fixed and every task has its own timing and scoring rules. Start with a diagnostic practice test, then focus on the tasks that carry the most weight for your weakest skill.

A four-week plan:

Week Focus
1 Take a PTE practice test and list your weakest question types
2 Speaking: Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence and Describe Image templates and fluency
3 Reading and Writing: fill-in-the-blanks collocations, essays and one-sentence summaries
4 Listening: Write From Dictation, Summarize Spoken Text; one more timed practice test

Plan your weeks with the study planner for exams and keep test day in view with the exam countdown timer. Our general guide on how to prepare for exam success covers study habits that work for any test.

How Can I Practice PTE at Home?

You can practice PTE at home with free practice questions, a headset and a timer. Record your speaking answers on your phone and listen for pauses, then type dictation sentences from podcasts or news clips and check every word.

  • Take a free PTE practice test each week to track your progress by part.
  • Practice Describe Image with charts from news articles under timed conditions.
  • Write one timed essay and two one-sentence summaries every few days.
  • Learn common collocations for fill-in-the-blank tasks.

PTE Exam Reading Tips

For PTE Reading, read the whole sentence before choosing a word for a blank, and check that your choice fits both meaning and grammar. In Reorder Paragraphs, find the topic sentence first, then link pronouns and connectors. In multiple-answer questions, choose only options you are sure of, because wrong choices lose marks.

Are Practice Tests Accurate?

Practice tests are accurate for learning the format and finding weak areas, but no unofficial practice test can predict your exact PTE score. The real test uses Pearson’s own scoring engine. Use practice scores to track the trend over time rather than as a promise of a specific result.

PTE Test Day Checklist: Last Minute Tips

On PTE test day, arrive early with the right ID and a calm plan for each part. These last minute tips for the PTE exam help:

  • Bring the valid ID you used to register, usually your passport, with an exact name match.
  • Arrive early for check-in, which includes a photo, biometric identity checks and security procedures.
  • Leave phones, watches and notes in the locker.
  • Adjust your microphone so it sits near your mouth but not directly in front of it.
  • Speak at a natural pace and do not stop if you make a small mistake.
  • Watch the timer for each section and keep moving; you cannot return to earlier questions.

PTE vs IELTS: Which Is Easier?

Neither test is easier for everyone. PTE suits people who are comfortable with computers and prefer automated scoring and fixed task types, while IELTS suits people who prefer a face-to-face Speaking interview and handwritten or typed essays marked by examiners.

Feature PTE Academic IELTS
Length About 2 hours About 2 hours 45 minutes
Score scale 10–90 Band 0–9
Speaking Recorded on computer Face-to-face with an examiner
Scoring Mainly automated Examiners for Writing and Speaking

PTE to IELTS Score Comparison

An IELTS Academic band of 7.5 corresponds to a PTE Academic score of 71 to 78, according to Pearson’s July 2025 concordance study summary. Pearson maps each IELTS overall band to a PTE Academic range:

IELTS Academic band PTE Academic score
4.5 24–30
5.0 31–38
5.5 39–46
6.0 47–54
6.5 55–62
7.0 63–70
7.5 71–78
8.0 79–85
8.5 86–89
9.0 90

Pearson advises institutions to use the concordance as a guide alongside other information, so always check the exact PTE minimum each university or visa program publishes.

Pearson PTE vs TOEFL

The TOEFL iBT takes about 1 hour 30 minutes and reports a 1–6 band score, while PTE takes about 2 hours and reports 10–90. Both are computer-based and widely accepted by universities. Choose the test whose task types play to your strengths and that every school on your list accepts.

Is PTE the Same as Duolingo?

No. PTE Academic is a Pearson test taken at a test center and scored 10–90, while the Duolingo English Test is an adaptive test taken at home in about 1 hour and scored 10–160. Institutions decide separately whether to accept each test.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Is the PTE Exam Hard?

The PTE exam is demanding but predictable. The 22 question types never change, so candidates who know each type and its timing well usually find it easier than expected. The hardest parts for most people are the fast-paced speaking tasks and integrated items like Retell Lecture and Write From Dictation, which test several skills at once.

Is PTE Worth It?

PTE Academic is worth it if the universities, employers or visa programs you are applying to accept it. Its strengths are computer-based scoring, flexible booking and fast results. If your target institution accepts only IELTS or TOEFL, choose that test instead, so always confirm acceptance first.

How Much Does the PTE Exam Cost?

Pearson sets the PTE exam fee by country, and in the USA it is charged in US dollars when you book. Because the price can change, check the current fee on the official Pearson PTE website before booking. Rescheduling or cancelling close to the test date can reduce any refund.

Where Can I Take the PTE Near Me?

You can take the PTE at a Pearson-authorized test center. When you book through the official PTE website, enter your city or ZIP code to see nearby centers and available dates. Many US metropolitan areas have at least one center.

How Long Is the PTE Mock Test?

A full PTE mock test lasts about 2 hours, the same as the real exam. Our free PTE practice test is shorter: 30 questions in 35 minutes in timed mode, or 10 questions in about 12 minutes, so you can practice each question type often without blocking out a whole afternoon.
