Healthcare Exams
Healthcare exams decide who can work as a nurse, nurse aide, phlebotomist or EMT. This hub gathers free practice tests and exam guides for the NCLEX-RN, NCLEX-PN, CNA, phlebotomy and EMT exams, with official formats, scoring rules and question counts, so you can find your weak areas before test day.
Nursing Licensure Exams
Nursing licensure exams are the NCLEX-RN for registered nurses and the NCLEX-PN for practical and vocational nurses. Both are written by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN), and your state board of nursing uses the result to decide whether to license you. Every exam on this hub has a free practice test and a guide.
NCLEX-RN (National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses)
NCSBN computer adaptive licensure exam for registered nurses: 85–150 items, up to 5 hours, including Next Generation NCLEX case studies.
NCLEX-PN (National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses)
NCSBN computer adaptive licensure exam for practical/vocational nurses: 85–150 items, up to 5 hours, pass/fail.
CNA Exam (National Nurse Aide Assessment Program, NNAAP)
State nurse aide certification exam: a written (or oral) test plus a hands-on skills evaluation; NNAAP is used in many states.
Certified Phlebotomy Technician (NHA CPT) Exam
NHA CPT certification exam: 100 scored questions plus 20 pretest items in 2 hours; scaled passing score 390 on a 200–500 scale.
National Registry EMT certification: a computer adaptive cognitive exam (70–120 items, 2 hours) plus a psychomotor skills exam.
NCLEX-RN
The NCLEX-RN is a computerized adaptive test of 85 to 150 items with a maximum of 5 hours, including the tutorial and breaks. It ends when the computer is 95% certain you are above or below the passing standard, and the result is pass or fail rather than a percentage. The NCLEX registration fee is $200, rising to $350 for US registrations from February 1, 2027.
NCLEX Practice Questions for RN
Our NCLEX practice questions for RN cover all eight client needs categories in the NCSBN test plan, from management of care to physiological adaptation. Each session gives 30 random questions in 60 minutes with explanations, which makes it useful both for nursing students midway through a program and for graduates in final review.
NCLEX-PN
The NCLEX-PN licenses practical nurses (LPNs) and vocational nurses (LVNs). It uses the same adaptive format as the RN exam, with 85 to 150 items and up to 5 hours, but its first content category is coordinated care instead of management of care. The fee is the same $200 NCLEX registration fee.
PN NCLEX Practice Questions
The PN NCLEX practice questions follow the PN test plan, so they double as NCLEX practice questions for LPN and LVN NCLEX practice questions. Expect safety, pharmacology and basic care scenarios, each followed by an explanation of the safest nursing action.
CNA Exam
The CNA exam is the state competency test for nurse aides, with a written (or oral) part and a hands-on skills evaluation. Many states use the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP), delivered by Credentia, while others contract different test vendors. Passing puts you on your state’s nurse aide registry.
CNA Practice Test
The CNA practice test is the state exam for CNA practice test prep in one place: 30 random questions on physical care, psychosocial care and the role of the nurse aide, with a 70% readiness benchmark. Passing standards are set by each state, so check your candidate handbook for the official score.
Phlebotomy Exam
The phlebotomy exam most employers recognise is a national certification such as the NHA Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) exam. The NHA CPT has 100 scored questions plus 20 pretest questions in 2 hours, costs $134 and requires a scaled score of 390 on a 200–500 scale.
Phlebotomy Practice Test
The phlebotomy practice test is a phlebotomy practice test for certification that mirrors the NHA content areas: safety and compliance, patient preparation, routine and special collections, and processing. It also works as a phlebotomy practice test for state exam preparation in the few states that license phlebotomists, since the core knowledge is the same.
EMT Exam
The EMT exam for national certification is run by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT). It combines a computer adaptive cognitive exam with a psychomotor skills exam, and the cognitive exam costs $104 per attempt. You can take the cognitive exam at a Pearson VUE test center or online through OnVUE.
EMT Practice Test
The EMT practice test is an EMT practice test for National Registry preparation, built around scene size-up, primary and secondary assessment, treatment and transport, and operations. Each answer explains why that intervention comes first, which is the skill the adaptive exam rewards.

Healthcare Certification Exams Compared
Healthcare certification exams differ most in length and format. The NCLEX and NREMT exams are adaptive, so the number of questions changes from candidate to candidate, while the CNA and phlebotomy exams use a fixed number of questions.
| Exam | Questions | Time | Format |
|---|---|---|---|
| NCLEX-RN | 85–150 items | Up to 5 hours | Adaptive, pass/fail |
| NCLEX-PN | 85–150 items | Up to 5 hours | Adaptive, pass/fail |
| CNA (NNAAP written) | 70 (60 scored) | 2 hours | Written plus skills test |
| Phlebotomy (NHA CPT) | 100 scored + 20 pretest | 2 hours | Scaled, 390 to pass |
| EMT (NREMT cognitive) | 70–120 items | 2 hours | Adaptive plus skills exam |
How Many Questions Are on the RN NCLEX Exam
The RN NCLEX exam has between 85 and 150 items. The exam stops as soon as the computer is 95% confident you are clearly above or below the passing standard, or when you reach the maximum length or the 5-hour time limit.
How Many Questions Are on the CNA Certification Exam
In NNAAP states, the CNA certification exam has 70 multiple-choice questions, of which 60 are scored and 10 are unscored pretest questions, with 2 hours to finish. States that use another vendor set their own question count.
How Many Questions Are on the Phlebotomy Certification Exam
The NHA CPT phlebotomy certification exam has 120 questions: 100 scored and 20 unscored pretest questions. Other certifying bodies set their own exam length, so check the handbook for the certification you choose.
How Many Questions Are on the EMT Exam
The NREMT EMT cognitive exam has 70 to 120 items, including 10 unscored pilot items. Because it is adaptive, two candidates can finish with very different numbers of questions.
Free Medical Certification Practice Tests
Every practice test on this hub is free, with no sign-up. Free NCLEX practice questions and free practice tests for the other healthcare exams all use original questions with answers and explanations, timed, untimed or study modes, and a section breakdown after you submit.
Free CNA Practice Test
The free CNA practice test is a CNA practice test for free with CNA practice test questions and answers on every part of the written exam. Study mode shows the explanation after each answer, which suits candidates still in their training program.
National Phlebotomy Practice Test
Our national phlebotomy practice test follows the NHA CPT content areas and question style. The phlebotomy practice test questions and answers include order of draw, tube additives and specimen handling, the topics most candidates find hardest.

Free PN NCLEX Practice Questions
Free PN NCLEX practice questions follow the NCLEX-PN test plan, so practical and vocational nursing students can practise with NCLEX practice questions and answers written for their scope of practice rather than the RN exam.
Healthcare Exams FAQ
What Kind of Questions Are on NCLEX?
NCLEX questions test clinical judgment rather than recall. Alongside standard multiple-choice items you will see select-all-that-apply questions and Next Generation NCLEX case studies, where you work through one client scenario across several linked items. Questions are spread across the client needs categories in the NCSBN test plan, from management of care to physiological adaptation.
Is the NCLEX-RN Exam Hard?
The NCLEX-RN is demanding because it is adaptive: the computer keeps choosing questions near the edge of your ability, so most candidates feel unsure throughout. It runs between 85 and 150 items in up to 5 hours, and the result is pass or fail. Steady practice with clinical judgment questions makes the format far less stressful.
Is NCLEX-PN Harder Than NCLEX-RN?
No, NCLEX-PN is not harder than NCLEX-RN; it tests a different scope of practice. Both exams are adaptive with 85–150 items and up to 5 hours, but the PN exam centres on coordinated care rather than management of care. NCSBN sets the PN passing standard at −0.18 logits, compared with 0.00 logits for the RN exam.
Is the CNA Exam Hard?
The CNA exam is manageable for candidates who finished a state-approved training program, but it is not a formality. You must pass both the written test and the hands-on skills evaluation, and missing one critical step on a skill can fail that task. Timed practice and rehearsing each skill aloud make the biggest difference.
Is the Phlebotomy Exam Hard?
The phlebotomy exam is moderately hard. For the NHA CPT exam, NHA reports a 75.96% pass rate across all administrations in 2024, so roughly one in four attempts did not pass. The questions that trip people up most often cover order of draw, special collections and specimen processing rather than the venipuncture steps themselves.
Is the EMT Exam Hard?
The NREMT EMT exam is challenging because it is adaptive and focuses on judgment in emergencies. The cognitive exam has 70–120 items in 2 hours, and you must also pass a psychomotor skills exam. Candidates who struggle usually miss questions on primary assessment priorities and treatment decisions, so practise scenario questions under time pressure.
