How to Use the ACT Score Calculator by Section
Pick a mode, enter one value per section and the composite updates instantly. “Section scale scores” mode uses official 1–36 scores and gives an exact composite. “Correct answers” mode estimates each section’s scale score from the questions you got right.
- Choose “Section scale scores (exact)” or “Correct answers (estimate)”.
- Enter English, Math and Reading. Tick “I took the optional Science section” and enter Science if you took it.
- Read your composite, STEM score, pre-2025 composite and each section score.
Our free ACT practice test gives you per-section results you can enter here.
ACT Score Calculator Math
Math has 45 questions on the enhanced ACT, so the raw field accepts 0 to 45. Math counts toward both the composite and the STEM score, which makes it the one section that moves two results at once.
ACT Score Calculator With Writing
The optional Writing test is scored separately and never changes the composite, so the calculator does not ask for it. Your Writing score appears on its own line of the official score report.
How the Composite ACT Score Calculator Works
The composite is the average of the English, Math and Reading scale scores, rounded to the nearest whole number, with .5 rounding up. This is ACT’s official rule for the enhanced ACT, and in scale-score mode the calculator applies it exactly.
For example, English 26, Math 25 and Reading 27 average 26.0, so the composite is 26. English 25, Math 24 and Reading 26 average exactly 25.0, while 25, 25 and 26 average 25.33, which rounds down to 25. If you took Science, the STEM score is the average of Math and Science with the same rounding.
ACT Scale Score Conversion Table
ACT converts raw scores with a different table for every test form, so no single conversion table exists. In correct-answers mode the calculator places your share of correct answers on a straight line from 1 (none right) to 36 (all right). The table shows what that estimate produces.
| Questions right | English (of 50) | Math (of 45) | Reading (of 36) | Science (of 40) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | 8 | 9 | 11 | 10 |
| 20 | 15 | 17 | 20 | 19 |
| 30 | 22 | 24 | 30 | 27 |
| 35 | 26 | 28 | 35 | 32 |
| 40 | 29 | 32 | — | 36 |
| 45 | 33 | 36 | — | — |
Official tables are curved, not straight, and some questions on each section are unscored field-test items. Use this as a rough guide and rely on ACT’s form-specific tables from official practice tests for a closer conversion.
ACT Score Calculator Out of 36
Every result is out of 36. Scale scores and the composite range from 1 to 36, and the calculator keeps any entry inside that range, so the composite can never exceed 36.
Enhanced ACT Score Calculator
The enhanced ACT, used for national tests from 2025 and for state and district testing from spring 2026, is shorter and makes Science optional. This enhanced ACT score calculator follows its rule: the composite comes from English, Math and Reading only, and Science feeds a separate STEM score.
New ACT Score Calculator
On the new ACT the test is 131 questions without Science and 171 with it, including unscored field-test questions, according to ACT. Math now has four answer choices per question. Because the scale is still 1–36, a new ACT score calculator reads the same way as before; only the inputs to the composite have changed.
ACT Score Calculator Without Science
You can leave Science out entirely. Untick the Science box and the calculator still gives your composite, since English, Math and Reading are all it needs. The STEM and pre-2025 composite fields show a dash.
Old ACT Score Calculator
Before the enhanced ACT, the composite was the average of four sections including Science. The calculator still shows this “pre-2025 composite” when you enter a Science score, which helps when you compare an older score with a new one.
ACT Score Percentile Calculator
The calculator does not show percentiles. ACT publishes national ranks for each scale score and updates them every year, and your official score report shows the rank for your composite and each section. Compare your result with those ranks or with the middle 50% range of the colleges on your list.
ACT Score Calculator Superscore
A superscore combines your best section scores from different test dates. To work one out, enter your highest English, Math and Reading scores in scale-score mode and the composite shown is your superscore. ACT reports superscores for students who have tested more than once, and each college decides whether to use them.
ACT Score Calculator 2026 Updates
For 2026 the main change is that state and district testing also moves to the enhanced format, so almost everyone now gets a composite without Science. The calculator already uses the 2026 rule and the current section lengths. The full format, fees and timing are in our ACT test guide.
SAT to ACT Score Calculator
ACT and College Board publish official concordance tables that link SAT totals with ACT composites. Use those tables for an SAT to ACT comparison rather than any unofficial formula. Our SAT score calculator works out your SAT total first, and the SAT practice test helps you decide which exam suits you.
Pre ACT Score Calculator
PreACT is a shorter practice version of the ACT for younger students, and its score report includes a predicted ACT score range. Use that prediction rather than converting the score yourself, then track your progress toward test day with our exam countdown.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Is My ACT Score?
Your ACT score is a composite from 1 to 36. On the enhanced ACT it is the average of your English, Math and Reading scale scores, rounded to the nearest whole number with .5 rounding up. Enter those three scores in the calculator to see it, or enter questions right for an estimate.
What's the Max Score on the ACT?
The maximum ACT score is 36, both for the composite and for each section. The STEM score, which combines Math and Science, is also reported on the 1–36 scale. The optional Writing test is scored separately and does not affect your composite.
Is a 21 Composite Score on the ACT Good?
A 21 composite is a solid, middle-of-the-pack score, a little above the recent national average that ACT reports. It meets the requirements of many colleges, but selective schools usually expect higher. Compare it with the middle 50% range each college publishes for admitted students.
How Good Is an ACT Score of 34?
A 34 is an excellent ACT score, near the top of the 1–36 scale and among the highest few percent of test takers. It is competitive at nearly every college. Check your score report for the exact national rank, which ACT updates each year.
Can You Use a Calculator on the ACT?
Yes, you can use a permitted calculator on the ACT Math section only. ACT publishes a calculator policy that bans certain models, such as calculators with computer algebra systems. A calculator is not needed or allowed on English, Reading or Science.
What's the Best Calculator for the ACT?
The best calculator for the ACT is a permitted graphing or scientific calculator you already know well. Many students use a TI-84 Plus family model. Whatever you choose, check it against ACT's current calculator policy and practise with it before test day.
