How to Use the GRE Score Calculator With Raw Scores

Choose a mode, enter your Verbal and Quant results, pick your Analytical Writing score and read your total. “Correct answers” mode estimates scaled scores from raw counts, while “Section scores” mode adds two official scores exactly.

  1. Choose “Correct answers (estimate)” or “Section scores (exact total)”.
  2. Enter Verbal and Quant: 0–27 correct each, or a score from 130 to 170 each.
  3. Select your Analytical Writing score from 0.0 to 6.0.
  4. Read your total out of 340, the three section scores and the note explaining whether the result is estimated or exact.

GRE Quant Score Calculator

Quantitative Reasoning has 27 questions on the shorter GRE, so the raw field accepts 0 to 27. Using it as a GRE quant score calculator, 20 correct answers gives an estimated 160.

GRE Verbal Score Calculator

Verbal Reasoning also has 27 questions and the same 130–170 scale. The two measures are estimated with the same rule, so the same raw count gives the same estimated score in each.

GRE AWA Score Calculator

Analytical Writing is a single “Analyze an Issue” essay on the shorter GRE, scored from 0 to 6 in half-point steps. Because essays are marked holistically, the calculator does not estimate this score; select the score you received or a realistic self-assessment. It is reported separately and never added to the 340 total.

How the GRE Score Is Calculated

ETS scores Verbal and Quant on a 130–170 scale and Analytical Writing on a 0–6 scale. The commonly quoted GRE total, 260–340, is the sum of Verbal and Quant, which is exactly what the calculator adds in section-score mode.

The raw-to-scaled step is where estimates come in. Each measure has two sections, and the second is harder or easier depending on how you did in the first. ETS uses the number right and the difficulty of the questions to set your score, and it publishes no raw-to-scaled table.

GRE Raw Score Conversion Chart

In correct-answers mode the calculator places your share of correct answers on a straight line from 130 (none right) to 170 (all 27 right), rounded to the nearest whole point. This chart shows the estimates it produces for either measure.

Questions right (of 27) Estimated Verbal or Quant score
5 137
10 145
14 151
18 157
20 160
22 163
24 166
27 170

Real scoring is not linear. A strong first section leads to a harder second section, where each correct answer can be worth more. Use official POWERPREP practice tests from ETS when you need the closest prediction, and use this chart to track progress between them.

New GRE Score Calculator for the Shorter GRE

Since September 22, 2023 the GRE General Test takes 1 hour 58 minutes and has 54 questions plus one essay, according to ETS. The score scales did not change, so a score from the shorter GRE reads the same way as one from the longer version. This new GRE score calculator uses the current 27-question sections.

GRE Score Calculator Percentile Ranks

Percentile ranks tell you what share of test takers scored below you, and they matter more to admissions committees than the raw total. ETS publishes them in its GRE interpretive data, and your score report shows a percentile for Verbal, Quant and Writing. The calculator does not compute percentiles, because they must come from ETS’s current table.

GRE Score Calculator Chart

The same scaled score sits at different percentiles in Verbal and Quant. Quant scores are typically higher across the test-taking population, so a given Quant score usually ranks lower than the same Verbal score. Look up each measure on its own row of the ETS table.

GRE Score Calculator 2025 Percentile Data

ETS refreshes its percentile tables each year using a recent multi-year group of test takers. If you are applying with a 2025 or 2026 score, use the most recent ETS edition, and remember that programs see the percentile printed on your official report. The full test format, fees and score validity are in our GRE test guide.

GRE Score Conversion Old to New

Before August 2011 the GRE used a 200–800 scale for each measure, which is why people search for a GRE score conversion from 1600 to 340. ETS published concordance tables to translate old scores to the 130–170 scale. Those old scores are now past ETS’s five-year reporting period, so a conversion is only useful for comparing historical data.

GRE to GMAT Score Conversion Calculator

GRE and GMAT scores are on different scales and come from different tests, so there is no simple formula between them. Some business schools use official comparison tools from the test owners. Our calculator does not convert GRE to GMAT. If you are deciding between the two, see our GMAT test guide and try the free GMAT practice test alongside the GRE one.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Is the GRE Score Calculated?

ETS reports Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning separately on a 130–170 scale in 1-point steps, and Analytical Writing on a 0–6 scale in half-point steps. The Verbal and Quant scores are based on correct answers and the difficulty of the questions you saw, because the second section of each measure adapts to your performance.

What Percentile Is My GRE Score?

Your percentile is the share of recent test takers who scored below you, and your official score report lists one for each measure. ETS calculates percentiles from test takers over a recent multi-year period and publishes them in its GRE interpretive data. Our calculator does not show percentiles, so look your score up in that current ETS table.

Is 286 a Good GRE Score?

A 286 total, such as 143 Verbal and 143 Quant, is below the middle of the 260–340 range and below the average scores ETS reports for both measures. It may meet the minimum for some programs but is not competitive for most selective graduate schools. Check each program's published score profile.

What Is a 50th Percentile GRE Score?

A 50th percentile GRE score is the score that half of recent test takers scored below. It is different for Verbal and Quant, because the two measures have different score distributions, and ETS updates the figures each year. Find the current values in ETS's GRE interpretive data table.
