How Our GRE Practice Test Works
Our GRE practice test draws questions at random from an original bank of 80 questions — 38 Verbal Reasoning and 42 Quantitative Reasoning — written in the style of the real GRE General Test. Each attempt mixes both measures, so no two sessions are the same.
Choose a mode before you start. Timed mode gives you 49 minutes for 30 questions, close to the real exam’s pace; untimed mode removes the clock; study mode shows the answer and explanation right after each question. You can flag questions, jump around with the question navigator and use the keyboard to answer.
When you finish, you see your score, percentage, time used and a breakdown by measure. The answer review shows every question with your answer, the correct answer, a worked explanation and a “why” note on the trap in each wrong option.
GRE Practice Test Online
This GRE practice test online runs in any modern browser on a computer, tablet or phone, with nothing to install. If you close the tab halfway through, your unfinished test is saved on your device and you can resume it later. Your last ten results are also kept on your device so you can see your progress.
Full Length GRE Practice Test Online Free
For a longer session, open the question count menu and choose all 80 questions. That is more than the 54 questions on the real exam, so it builds stamina. For a full length GRE practice test online free with the official interface and essay, use the free ETS POWERPREP tests and keep ours for daily practice.
Free GRE Practice Test With Score
Every attempt gives you a free GRE practice test with score: a percentage overall and per measure, compared with a 70% readiness benchmark. The GRE itself has no pass mark, so the benchmark is a study target, not an official cutoff. To convert your correct answers to an estimated 130–170 scaled score, use the GRE score calculator.
What the Real GRE Covers: GRE Practice Test Questions
The real GRE has three measures: Analytical Writing (one essay, 30 minutes), Verbal Reasoning (27 questions, 41 minutes) and Quantitative Reasoning (27 questions, 47 minutes). Verbal and Quantitative are section-adaptive. Our GRE practice test questions cover the two multiple-choice measures; see the GRE test guide for the full format.
GRE Practice Test Verbal
The GRE practice test verbal questions use the three real question types: text completion, sentence equivalence (choose the two words that give sentences the same meaning) and reading comprehension. Reading questions ask about main idea, inference, detail, the author’s attitude and how an argument can be strengthened or weakened.
Quantitative GRE Practice Test
Our quantitative GRE practice test includes quantitative comparison questions, standard problem solving and data interpretation questions based on tables and charts. Quantitative comparison is unique to the GRE: you decide whether Quantity A or Quantity B is greater, whether they are equal or whether the relationship cannot be determined.
GRE Practice Test Math Topics
GRE practice test math stays at roughly a high school level. Expect exponents, roots, fractions, percents and successive percent change, ratios, averages, mean vs. median, standard deviation, integer properties and remainders, linear equations and inequalities, coordinate geometry, triangles and circles, probability and combinations.
GRE Practice Test Analytical Writing
The real Analytical Writing measure is one “Analyze an Issue” essay, scored 0–6 in half-point steps. Our test does not include essays, because they cannot be graded fairly by a script. Practise by writing timed 30-minute responses to sample issue prompts from ETS, then compare them with ETS’s scored sample essays.
GRE Practice Test Scoring Explained, With Solutions
Our results screen scores each attempt as a percentage of questions answered correctly, overall and by measure, with a 70% readiness benchmark. Every answer comes with a worked solution, so this is a GRE practice test with solutions as well as a score. The real GRE reports Verbal and Quantitative on a 130–170 scale and Analytical Writing on a 0–6 scale.
GRE Practice Test vs Actual Scores
Practice scores and actual scores differ for three reasons: unofficial tests vary in difficulty, the real exam adapts the second section to your performance, and test-day nerves change pacing. Compare your GRE practice test vs actual results using trends — if you score consistently above 70% here and well on official POWERPREP tests, you are on track.
GRE Practice Test Questions Free With Explanations
All GRE practice test questions are free with explanations: the correct answer, the reasoning step by step and a short note on why each tempting wrong answer fails. Read explanations for questions you got right too, to confirm you chose the answer for the right reason.
Tips to Score Higher: Free GRE Practice Test Questions
The fastest way to raise your GRE score is to practise a little every day and review every mistake. Free GRE practice test questions are most useful when you log each error by question type and revisit that type until it stops costing you points.
Verbal GRE Practice Test Drills
Run short verbal GRE practice test drills in study mode: ten questions, then read every explanation. Add unfamiliar words from text completion and sentence equivalence to a deck you make with flashcards online, and review it daily.
GRE Practice Test Quantitative Pacing
On the real exam you have about 1 minute 45 seconds per Quantitative question. Use timed mode to build GRE practice test quantitative pacing: skip any question that takes over two minutes, flag it and come back. For quantitative comparison, test simple numbers such as 0, 1, negatives and fractions before doing algebra.
GRE Practice Test Verbal Reasoning Strategy
For GRE practice test verbal reasoning, predict the answer before you read the choices. Find the signal words — although, because, moreover — and decide whether the blank should agree with or contrast with the rest of the sentence. In reading comprehension, answer from the passage, not from outside knowledge.
GRE Practice Test Quantitative Reasoning Strategy
For GRE practice test quantitative reasoning, estimate first: many answer choices can be ruled out by size alone. Write down what the question asks for before calculating, because traps often give the right number for the wrong quantity. Plan your weeks with the study planner for exams, count down with the exam countdown timer and, if you are also considering business school, try a free GMAT practice test.
FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
How Long Is the GRE Practice Test?
Our timed GRE practice test gives you 49 minutes for 30 questions, which matches the pace of the real Verbal and Quantitative sections. A full official ETS practice test runs about 1 hour 58 minutes, the same as the real GRE, because it includes the 30-minute essay and all four multiple-choice sections.
Are GRE Practice Tests Free?
Many are. This GRE practice test is completely free with no account, and ETS offers free POWERPREP practice tests on its website. Paid options, such as POWERPREP PLUS and commercial courses, add more full-length tests and explanations, but you can prepare well using free official tests plus free daily practice questions.
Which GRE Practice Test Is the Most Accurate?
The official ETS POWERPREP tests are the most accurate GRE practice tests, because ETS builds them from retired real questions and scores them on the real 130–170 scale. Unofficial tests, including ours, are best for learning and drilling. Use them to build skills and official tests to predict your score.
How to Score a GRE Practice Test?
Count your correct answers in each measure, then convert them to the 130–170 scale. Official ETS tests do this automatically. For other tests, enter your correct answers into our GRE score calculator for an estimated scaled score. The estimate is approximate, because ETS does not publish a raw-to-scaled conversion table.
Can You Retake a GRE Practice Test?
Yes. You can retake our free GRE practice test as often as you like, and each attempt draws a new random set of questions from the bank. Official POWERPREP tests can be retaken too, but repeated questions inflate your score, so a retaken official test is no longer a reliable predictor.
Can You Pause a GRE Practice Test?
On our test, untimed and study modes have no clock, and if you close the page your unfinished test is saved on your device so you can resume later. Timed mode keeps counting, like the real exam. The real GRE cannot be paused, so take at least a few practice tests in one uninterrupted sitting.
