DMV Practice Test
Take a free DMV practice test for your state’s written permit and license knowledge test. Pick from ten states, each scored against the pass mark the state publishes, or drill US road signs. Every test is timed, randomized from an original bank and explained answer by answer.

South Carolina DMV Knowledge Test (Beginner’s Permit)
South Carolina beginner’s permit knowledge test on traffic laws and road signs, given at SCDMV branches.
Road Signs Practice Test (MUTCD)
Practice US road signs as defined by the federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
California DMV Practice Test
The California DMV practice test prepares you for the Class C instruction permit knowledge test, a multiple-choice test based on the California Driver’s Handbook. You need 80% to pass, and you get three attempts per application.
Minors who fail must wait 7 days before retesting, so it pays to pass the practice test comfortably first.
Ohio BMV Practice Test
The Ohio BMV practice test mirrors the temporary instruction permit knowledge test: 40 multiple-choice questions on traffic signs and motor vehicle laws, with 75% needed to pass. Ohio offers the test online or in person, in several languages.
New York DMV Practice Test
The New York permit practice test copies the real learner permit test: 20 questions, of which you must answer at least 14 correctly. New York adds a twist: you must also get at least 2 of the 4 road-sign questions right.
Kentucky Permit Practice Test
The Kentucky permit practice test covers the written test on driving rules and highway signs, given by Kentucky State Police at a testing center. You need 80% to pass, and the Kentucky Driver Manual is the only approved study source.
Massachusetts RMV Practice Test
The Mass permit practice test follows the Class D learner’s permit exam: 25 questions in 25 minutes, with 18 correct to pass. The RMV timer cannot be paused, so practice in timed mode.
New Jersey Permit Practice Test
The New Jersey permit practice test prepares you for the general knowledge test at an MVC testing center. The real test has 50 questions and you need 40 correct (80%).
Indiana BMV Practice Test
The Indiana BMV practice test covers both parts of the learner’s permit knowledge exam: traffic maneuvers and traffic signs. Indiana requires 80% on each part, so a strong overall score is not enough if one part is weak.
Missouri Driving Test Practice
The Missouri permit practice test follows the Class F written test: 25 multiple-choice questions with 20 correct (80%) to pass. Missouri also gives a separate road sign recognition test, and the written test is not open book.
Tennessee DMV Practice Test
The Tennessee DMV practice test mirrors the learner permit knowledge test: 30 questions with 80% to pass. Teens aged 15 to 17 can take the proctored test online in English or Spanish, with 60 minutes to finish.
South Carolina DMV Practice Test
The South Carolina DMV practice test covers traffic laws and road signs for the beginner’s permit knowledge test, given on a walk-in basis at SCDMV branches. SCDMV does not state a pass mark on the page we checked, so our test uses a labeled 80% readiness benchmark.
Road Signs Test Practice
Road signs test practice helps in every state, because every knowledge test includes sign questions. The road signs test covers regulatory, warning and guide signs as defined in the federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), the national standard all states follow.
Learn signs by shape and color first: an octagon always means stop, a triangle means yield, and yellow diamonds warn of hazards ahead. Once the categories are clear, individual signs are much easier to remember.

DMV Practice Test in Spanish
Our practice tests are in English only. Several states offer the real test in Spanish: Ohio lists it among its test languages, Tennessee offers its online teen test in English or Spanish, and New York gives the test in 20 languages. Check your state’s agency for its language options and a translated driver manual.
Written Driving Test Practice: How the Knowledge Test Works
Written driving test practice prepares you for the knowledge test, a multiple-choice test on traffic laws, safe driving and road signs taken at a motor vehicle office, a testing center or, in some states, online. You usually take it with a vision screening before you receive a learner’s permit.
DMV Practice Test for Permit
A DMV practice test for permit applicants focuses on the material in your state’s driver manual: right-of-way, speed limits, turns, parking, sharing the road and alcohol laws. Take it several times until you pass comfortably on new question sets.
DMV Practice Test for License
A DMV practice test for license applicants covers the same knowledge, and is useful if you are moving to a new state, renewing after your license lapsed or returning to driving. Some states require a knowledge test in these situations, so check your state’s rules.
Learning Permit Practice Test for Teens
A learning permit practice test is most useful for teens taking the test for the first time. Minimum ages and driver education rules differ by state, so check your state’s requirements. Practicing a little each day during driver education works better than cramming.
Driving Permit Practice Test for Adults
A driving permit practice test for adults covers the same content as for teens, but adults over 18 often skip some graduated licensing steps. Adult applicants also tend to rely on experience as a passenger, so focus on exact numbers such as distances and limits.
DMV Test Questions and Answers
DMV test questions and answers focus on rules you can apply on the road, not trivia. Our answer review explains each correct answer and the rule behind it, which works better than memorizing DMV practice test questions and answers in order.
Common DMV Test Questions
Common DMV test questions ask what to do at a four-way stop, when to yield to pedestrians, how far to signal before a turn, what a flashing red light means and how alcohol affects driving. Exact numbers vary by state, so learn them from your own manual.
DMV Practice Test Knowledge Topics
DMV practice test knowledge topics usually include traffic signs and signals, right-of-way, speed and following distance, lane use and turns, parking, sharing the road with trucks, cyclists and pedestrians, emergencies and impaired driving.
DMV Practice Test 2026 Updates
For a DMV practice test 2026, the main national change is the MUTCD 11th Edition, whose Revision 1 took effect on March 5, 2026. States have two years to adopt the national standard, so some sign details may change in your state manual over that period.
Driving Test Practice Tips to Pass
Driving test practice works best in short daily sessions over a week or two. Read one chapter of your driver manual, then take a practice test on it.
Free Driving Test Practice Routine
Try this free driving test practice routine:
- Take one practice test before studying to find your weak topics.
- Read those chapters of your driver manual.
- Take a practice test in study mode and read every explanation.
- Finish with timed tests until you pass three in a row.
Plan your week with the study planner and count down to your appointment with the exam countdown.
Driving Test vs Permit Test
A driving test vs permit test comparison is simple: the permit test is the written knowledge test, and the driving test is the road test, where an examiner watches you drive. You usually pass the permit test first, hold the permit for a period set by your state, then take the road test.
How Many DMV Practice Tests Should I Take
Take as many DMV practice tests as you need to pass several different random sets comfortably, ideally scoring 5 to 10 points above your state’s pass mark. For most people that means five to ten tests over a week or two.
Commercial drivers should also try the CDL practice test on the licensing exam hub, and our free practice tests for permit directory lists every other exam.
DMV Practice Test FAQ
Is the DMV Practice Test Free?
Yes, every DMV practice test on this site is free, with no account, download or payment. You can retake each state test as often as you like, and each attempt draws a new random set of questions. Official DMV practice materials, where states offer them, are free too.
Are DMV Practice Tests Accurate?
A DMV practice test is accurate when it covers the same rules and signs as your state’s driver manual and uses the same pass mark. Ours are written in the style of each state’s knowledge test and score you against the published pass mark. The real question pool is not public, so always study the official manual as well.
Is the DMV Practice Test the Same as the Real Test?
No. States do not publish their real test questions, so no practice test is identical to the real one. A good practice test covers the same topics, question style and length, so the real test feels familiar. If you can pass several different random practice sets comfortably, you are usually well prepared.
How Many Questions Are on the DMV Practice Test?
It depends on the state, and our practice tests follow the real length where the state publishes it. New York asks 20 questions, Massachusetts and Missouri 25, Tennessee 30 on its online teen test, Ohio 40 and New Jersey 50. Other states use about 30 questions in our practice version.
What Is the Passing Score for the DMV Written Test?
Most states require between 70% and 80%. California, Kentucky, New Jersey, Indiana, Missouri and Tennessee require 80%, Ohio 75%, Massachusetts 18 of 25 (72%) and New York 14 of 20 (70%), including 2 of the 4 road-sign questions. Each state test on this page uses that state’s official pass mark.
Can You Do the DMV Written Test Online?
In some states, yes. Ohio offers its permit knowledge test online as well as in person, Tennessee lets 15- to 17-year-olds take a proctored test online, and New York offers an online test at participating high schools. Many other states test only at an office, so check your state’s motor vehicle agency.
Is the DMV Written Test Hard?
The DMV written test is not hard if you study the driver manual, but many first-time applicants fail because they rely on driving experience instead of the exact rules. Questions on stopping distances, right-of-way, alcohol limits and sign meanings trip people up. A few practice tests show your gaps quickly.
How Many Questions Can You Miss on the DMV Written Test?
It depends on your state’s test length and pass mark. You can miss 6 of 20 in New York, 7 of 25 in Massachusetts, 5 of 25 in Missouri, 10 of 40 in Ohio and 10 of 50 in New Jersey. Where the state publishes only a percentage, aim to score well above it in practice.
