How Our Online CDL Practice Test Works

Our online CDL practice test draws questions at random from an original bank written against the topics in state CDL manuals. Each attempt mixes questions from all eight sections, so every session is different.

Choose 10, 30 or all 88 questions, then pick a mode. You can flag questions, use the question navigator and answer with the keyboard. When you submit, you get your score, your percentage, the time used and a breakdown by section, followed by a full answer review.

CDL Practice Test Online With No Sign-Up

This CDL practice test online needs no sign-up, email or download. If you close the page mid-test, your unfinished attempt is saved on your device and you can resume it later, and your last 10 results are kept there so you can track progress.

Free CDL Practice Test

The free CDL practice test has three modes. Study mode shows the answer and explanation after every question. Untimed mode saves feedback for the end. Timed mode gives you 30 minutes for 30 questions, scaled to the count you choose, to build pace before the real test.

CDL Practice Test App vs Browser

There is no CDL practice test app to install. The test runs in any modern browser on a phone, tablet or computer, so it works like an app without taking up storage. Add the page to your home screen if you want one-tap access.

What the CDL Permit Test Covers

The CDL permit test is really several knowledge tests: general knowledge for everyone, plus air brakes, combination vehicles and endorsements depending on your license. Our bank is organized into eight sections:

  • Vehicle inspection: pre-trip, en-route and post-trip checks.
  • Basic control of your vehicle: accelerating, steering, backing and shifting.
  • Safe driving: space and speed management, hazards, night and winter driving, emergencies.
  • Transporting cargo safely: weight limits, balance and securement.
  • Air brakes: system parts, inspection and use.
  • Combination vehicles: coupling, uncoupling and handling.
  • Hazardous materials awareness: placards, shipping papers and driver duties.
  • Regulations and disqualifications: offenses that can cost you your CDL.

CDL Practice Test General Knowledge

The general knowledge test is the one every applicant takes, and it is the longest. Five of our sections — vehicle inspection, basic control, safe driving, cargo and regulations — cover it, so these CDL practice test general knowledge questions and answers make up most of each set.

Air Brakes

Air brake questions cover compressors, governors, reservoirs, spring brakes and the air brake check. Scoring below 80% on the real air brakes test adds an air brake restriction to your license, so use this section as your CDL practice test for air brakes.

Combination Vehicles

Combination vehicle questions cover coupling and uncoupling, trailer air supply, rollover and jackknife risks, and inspecting a combination vehicle. Class A applicants need this test; use these questions as your combination vehicle CDL practice test.

Hazardous Materials and Other Endorsements

Our hazardous materials CDL practice test section covers hazmat awareness: placards, shipping papers and driver responsibilities. It is not a full endorsement test. For tanker, passenger, school bus or doubles and triples endorsements, study the matching section of your state manual; the CDL test guide lists every endorsement.

Scoring Explained

Our practice test uses the federal pass mark: at least 80% correct, the same standard every state applies to each CDL knowledge test. Your results screen shows whether you reached 80% and how you scored in each section.

Because each real test is scored separately, look at your section scores, not just the total. A strong general knowledge score will not save a weak air brakes result on test day.

CDL Practice Test Questions and Answers

The answer review gives CDL practice test questions and answers with an explanation and a “why” note for every question, so you learn the rule behind each answer instead of memorizing a key. Read the explanations for questions you got right too, to confirm your reasoning.

Tips to Pass the CDL Permit Test

Using a CDL practice test for permit preparation works best alongside your state manual:

  1. Read one manual section at a time, starting with general knowledge.
  2. Take a set in study mode for that section and review every explanation.
  3. Move to timed mode once you are scoring near 80%.
  4. Book the knowledge tests only when you pass three timed sets in a row.

Plan your weeks with the study planner for exams, count down to your appointment with the exam countdown, and refresh signs with the road signs test or road signs flashcards.

CDL Practice Test in Spanish

Our CDL practice test is in English only. Whether your state offers knowledge tests in other languages is a state decision, and those policies have been changing, so check your state licensing agency. Federal rules also require commercial drivers to read and speak English well enough to understand road signs and communicate with officials.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are CDL Practice Tests Accurate?

Good CDL practice tests are accurate on content, but none uses the real state questions, which are kept secure. Our questions are original and written against the topics in state CDL manuals, using the same 80% pass mark as the real knowledge tests. Treat practice scores as a readiness check, not a guarantee.

Is the CDL Practice Test the Same as the Real Test?

No. The real CDL knowledge tests use secure state questions, and each state sets its own number of questions. Our practice test covers the same topics in the same multiple-choice style, so the knowledge transfers, but the exact wording will be different on test day.

What Is the Best CDL Practice Test?

The best CDL practice test covers every test you need, changes the questions each time, explains why each answer is right and uses the real 80% pass mark. Combine it with your state CDL manual, since every real question is based on that manual.

How Many Questions Are on the CDL Test?

Federal rules require at least 30 questions on each CDL knowledge test, and your state sets the exact number. Most applicants take more than one test — general knowledge plus air brakes, combination vehicles or endorsements — so check your state manual for each test’s length.

Is the CDL Test Easy?

The CDL test is not easy without preparation, because the pass mark is 80% on every knowledge test and the topics are specific to commercial vehicles. With the state manual and a few weeks of practice tests, most applicants pass on the first or second attempt.

How Much Is a CDL Practice Test?

Our CDL practice test is free: no account, no download and no limit on retakes. The official knowledge tests are not free; each state sets its own testing and permit fees, so check your state licensing agency for current prices.
