SAT Test: Guide and Practice Tests
The SAT test is the College Board’s digital admissions test, with a Reading and Writing section and a Math section scored together from 400 to 1600. Start with the exam guides and practice tests below.
Digital College Board admissions test: Reading and Writing plus Math, 2 hours 14 minutes, scored 400–1600.

GMAC business school admissions test: Quantitative, Verbal and Data Insights, 64 questions in 2 hours 15 minutes, scored 205–805.
The SAT test guide explains the format, registration, the $68 fee and how the section-adaptive scoring works. When you are ready to practice, the full SAT practice test mixes both sections, and works as an SAT practice test online for free for high school juniors and seniors.
SAT Math and Reading and Writing Section Tests
SAT questions in math and English are tested in separate sections, so you can drill them one at a time. The SAT math practice test covers the 44-question Math section, scored 200–800, and SAT reading and writing practice covers the 54 short-passage questions of the Reading and Writing section.
ACT Test: Guide and Practice Test
The ACT test now uses the enhanced format: English, Math and Reading in 2 hours 5 minutes, with Science and Writing optional. The composite score runs from 1 to 36.
The ACT test guide covers fees, add-ons and the new STEM score. The ACT practice test follows the enhanced sections, giving you an ACT practice test online free with score and section breakdown, and is a good starting point for juniors.
GRE Test: Graduate School Admissions
The GRE test is the ETS exam for graduate school admission, with Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning in 1 hour 58 minutes. Verbal and Quantitative scores run from 130 to 170, and scores stay reportable for 5 years.

SAT vs ACT Practice Test
An SAT vs ACT practice test comparison is the fastest way to choose between the two, because most colleges accept either. Take one timed practice test of each, compare section results and focus on the exam where you feel more comfortable.
SAT ACT Practice Test Format Differences
The SAT ACT practice test format differs in pace, structure and scoring:
| SAT | ACT | |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Digital, section-adaptive | Multiple choice, Science and Writing optional |
| Testing time | 2 hours 14 minutes | 2 hours 5 minutes (2 hours 45 minutes with Science) |
| Questions | 98 | 131 (171 with Science) |
| Score scale | 400–1600 | 1–36 composite |
| Science | No separate section | Optional section |
The ACT asks more questions in a similar time, so it rewards speed, while the adaptive SAT gives slightly more time per question.
Which ACT Test Is the Easiest?
No ACT test date is easier than another. ACT equates scores across test forms, so a harder form is scored more generously and an easier one more strictly. Choose a date that gives you enough preparation time and does not clash with exams or activities.
GRE vs GMAT Practice Test
A GRE vs GMAT practice test comparison helps business school applicants, because many programs accept either. Take one of each and compare your result to the typical scores at your target schools.
Which GRE Test Should I Take?
Most applicants should take the GRE General Test, which graduate programs across most fields accept. ETS also offers GRE Subject Tests in a few fields, which some programs request, so check each program’s requirements before you register.
Which GMAT Should I Take?
The GMAT Focus Edition is the current GMAT. The main choice is whether to take it at a test center or online. The format and scoring are the same, while the US fee is $275 at a test center and $300 online.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
Are SAT Practice Tests Accurate?
The most accurate SAT practice tests are the official full-length tests in the College Board’s Bluebook app, because they use the real adaptive format and scoring. Third-party tests, including ours, are accurate for content and pacing but give an estimate rather than an official score. Use both: ours for volume, Bluebook for a final check.
Are ACT Practice Tests Harder?
Practice tests are not meant to be harder than the real ACT, though some commercial books run harder on purpose. Ours follow the enhanced ACT’s sections and pace. If your practice scores are inconsistent, look at the section breakdown rather than the total, because one weak area often explains the difference.
Can the SAT Be Taken Online?
The SAT is digital but not taken at home. You take it in the College Board’s Bluebook app on a laptop or tablet at a test center or at your school, with a proctor present. You can practice online at home, including full-length official practice tests in Bluebook.
Can the ACT Be Taken Online?
Not from home for most students. The ACT is given at test centers and schools, on paper or on a computer depending on the site. Check the format offered at your test center when you register with ACT, and practice on screen if you will test on a computer.
Are GRE Practice Tests Free?
Yes, free GRE practice tests are available. ETS offers free official POWERPREP practice tests, and you can take our free GRE practice test online with Verbal and Quantitative questions in the current format. Paid practice materials add more full-length tests, but free ones are enough for many test takers.
Are GMAT Practice Tests Accurate?
The official GMAT practice exams from GMAC are the most accurate, because they use the real adaptive algorithm and the 205–805 score scale. Our free GMAT practice test matches the GMAT Focus Edition sections and question types, so it is accurate for content and pacing but does not produce an official-style scaled score.
