How Our Free ACT Practice Test Works

Our ACT practice test online is free and draws questions at random from an original bank of 92 questions written in the style of the enhanced ACT. The bank covers English, Math, Reading and Science, and each set includes all four sections in proportion to the bank.

Choose a mode before you start. Timed mode gives you one minute per question, untimed mode removes the clock, and study mode shows the answer and explanation after each question. When you submit, you see a score, a percentage, the time used and a breakdown by section.

Online ACT Practice Test

This online ACT practice test needs no account and no download. It runs in any browser on a phone, tablet or laptop. An unfinished test is saved on your device so you can resume after a reload, and your last ten results are kept to show your progress.

ACT Practice Test Full

The real enhanced ACT has 131 questions in English, Math and Reading. For a longer ACT practice test, full-bank mode is available: choose “All 92 questions” in the question count menu, which takes about 92 minutes in timed mode. It is the closest our site comes to a full sitting.

ACT Practice Test Timed

An ACT practice test timed at one minute per question builds the pace you need. The real test is tighter in English, with 35 minutes for 50 questions, and a little looser in Math and Reading, so speed up on grammar questions and save time for math word problems.

Short ACT Practice Test

A short ACT practice test is the best daily habit. Choose 10 questions for a 10-minute session, or the default 30 questions for 30 minutes. Each new set is drawn at random, so you see fresh questions every time.

How Long Does an ACT Practice Test Take?

An official full-length ACT practice test takes 2 hours 5 minutes of testing time, or 2 hours 45 minutes with Science, plus a break. On our site, a 10-question set takes 10 minutes and a 30-question set takes 30 minutes in timed mode.

What the Real ACT Covers: ACT Practice Test Questions

The real ACT has three core sections, English, Math and Reading, plus optional Science and Writing. Our ACT practice test questions cover English, Math, Reading and Science, so you can practise Science even if you are still deciding whether to take it.

ACT English

ACT English has 50 questions in 35 minutes. You revise underlined parts of passages for punctuation, grammar, sentence structure, word choice and organization, and “NO CHANGE” is often a correct answer. Common topics include comma splices, apostrophes, verb tense and transitions.

ACT Math

ACT Math has 45 questions in 50 minutes, each with four answer choices, and a calculator is allowed. The math ACT practice test questions cover algebra, functions, geometry, statistics, probability and number skills. Algebra and functions make up the largest share.

ACT Reading

ACT Reading has 36 questions in 40 minutes. In an ACT practice test for reading, expect passages from literature, social science, humanities and natural science, with questions on main ideas, details, word meaning, author’s purpose and connections between paired passages.

ACT Science

ACT Science is optional and has 40 questions in 40 minutes. A science ACT practice test focuses on reading graphs, tables and experiment descriptions and on comparing conflicting viewpoints. Outside knowledge helps only a little, so practise reading data quickly.

ACT Practice Test Scoring Explained

Our ACT practice test and score report shows your number correct, a percentage, a result against a 70% readiness benchmark and an estimated ACT composite from 1 to 36. The estimate is 1 plus 35 times your share of correct answers, rounded to a whole number. It is based on your percentage correct, not an official score, because ACT uses a different raw-to-scale table for each test form. The real ACT has no pass mark, so the benchmark is labeled as a readiness target.

On the real test, your composite is the rounded average of English, Math and Reading, and Science counts toward a separate STEM score. For a fuller estimate built from separate section scores, use the ACT score calculator. The ACT test guide explains scoring in more detail.

Answers for ACT Practice Test

The answers for every ACT practice test question appear in the answer review after you submit. Each entry shows your answer, the correct answer and whether you got it right, and an “Incorrect Only” filter lets you scan your misses quickly.

ACT Practice Test Answer Key

Unlike a printed ACT practice test answer key, our review explains each answer instead of listing letters. That makes it easier to see why you missed a question and which rule to remember next time.

ACT Practice Test With Answers and Explanations

This free ACT practice test with answers and explanations includes a full explanation for every question and a “why” note on the common traps in the wrong options. Read the explanations for correct answers too, to confirm your reasoning.

Tips to Score Higher: Review ACT Practice Test Questions and Answers

The fastest way to raise your score is to review ACT practice test questions and answers after every set. Sort each miss into content gap, misread question or timing, and write one rule for each. Plan your weeks with the study planner for exams and track your test date with the exam countdown timer.

Free ACT Practice Test vs Official Tests

A free ACT practice test like ours is best for daily skill practice, because each set is new and explained. Official tests are best for full-length checkpoints and score estimates. Use both, and keep grammar rules and formulas in a deck you make flashcards online with.

Full Length ACT Practice Test Under Real Timing

Take a full length ACT practice test under real timing at least every two weeks in the final month. Sit it in one go at the same time of day as your test, so your focus lasts through Reading. Our test taking strategies guide covers pacing.

Use the ACT Practice Test Official Releases

The ACT practice test official releases are the best source for a realistic composite estimate. Save at least one for the final week. If you are also considering the SAT, try our SAT practice test and compare results on the ACT and SAT practice test hub.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Are ACT Practice Tests Accurate?

Official ACT practice tests are the most accurate, because they come with the conversion tables for their own form. Unofficial tests, including ours, are accurate for practising question types and finding weak sections, but any scaled score they suggest is an estimate. Use our sets for skills and official tests for score predictions.

Are ACT Practice Tests Harder?

Official ACT practice tests are designed to match the real test, not to be harder. Some third-party tests are harder, especially in Math, which can make scores look lower than they would be on test day. If your scores vary a lot between sources, trust the official tests for your estimate.

Does the ACT Practice Test Give You a Score?

Yes. Our ACT practice test gives your number correct, a percentage, a breakdown by section and an estimated ACT composite from 1 to 36, labeled as an estimate rather than an official score. For estimated section scores and a STEM score, enter your results in our ACT score calculator.

Can You Pause an ACT Practice Test?

On our site, effectively yes: the timer only runs while the page is open and visible, and your progress is saved on your device. Close the tab and resume later with the time you had left. On the real ACT you cannot pause a section, so take some practice tests in one sitting.

Are There Free ACT Practice Tests?

Yes. ACT publishes free official practice material on its website, and our free ACT practice test gives you unlimited random question sets with answers and explanations. No account or download is needed, and each new set draws different questions from the bank.

How Many Official ACT Practice Tests Are There?

ACT publishes a small number of free official practice tests online and several more in The Official ACT Prep Guide, and the selection changes over time. Check ACT's website for the current list, and make sure the tests you use follow the enhanced format introduced in 2025.
