OSHA Practice Test
An OSHA practice test helps you prepare for the final exam that most OSHA 10 and OSHA 30 Outreach courses end with. This guide explains what the final exam is, how the 10-hour and 30-hour courses differ, how online classes work, what OSHA does and does not set, and how to pass the first time.

What Is the OSHA 10 and 30 Final Exam
The OSHA 10 and 30 final exam is the knowledge check that many trainers and online providers give at the end of an OSHA Outreach Training Program class. It confirms that you understood the course before you receive your completion card.
It helps to know what the Outreach program is and is not. OSHA describes it as a voluntary training program, not a certification. The card you receive shows you completed 10 or 30 hours of safety training; it is not a license, and OSHA does not “certify” workers through it.
Classes are offered for construction, general industry, maritime and disaster site work. Trainers issue completion cards within 90 days of the class, and replacement cards come from the trainer for classes taken within the last five years.
Is There a Test at the End of OSHA 30
Often, yes, but not always. Testing is optional under OSHA’s Outreach rules, so whether there is a test at the end of OSHA 30 depends on your trainer or OSHA-authorized online provider. Most online providers include a final exam, and many classroom trainers use quizzes or a final test to check understanding.
Because the provider writes the test, it also sets the number of questions, the passing score and how many attempts you get. Read your provider’s course details before you enroll.
Which OSHA 30 Do I Need
You need the OSHA 30 that matches the industry you work in. The two most common are:
- Construction: for building, renovation, roadwork and other construction sites.
- General industry: for manufacturing, warehousing, health care, retail and most other non-construction workplaces.
Maritime and disaster site classes also exist for those sectors. If your employer, union or a job site requires a card, ask which industry version they accept before you sign up.
Why OSHA 30 Is Important
OSHA 30 is important because it gives supervisors and workers with safety duties a broad grounding in hazard recognition, worker rights and employer responsibilities. Some states, cities and employers require an OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 card for certain jobs or sites, even though OSHA itself treats the training as voluntary.
Does OSHA 30 Expire
No. OSHA states that Outreach completion cards for construction, general industry, maritime and disaster site work have no expiration date. An employer, union, city or state can still require you to repeat the training after a set number of years, so check their rules.
Who Is an OSHA Authorized Trainer
An OSHA authorized trainer is an instructor who has completed an OSHA trainer course and is authorized to teach Outreach classes. Trainers are authorized, not certified, and they are not OSHA employees. Only a class taught by an authorized trainer or an OSHA-authorized online provider leads to an official completion card.
OSHA 30 Test Format
There is no single OSHA 30 test format, because OSHA does not publish a standard final exam. Each trainer or authorized provider writes its own, usually as multiple-choice questions drawn from the course modules. What OSHA does set is the class itself:
| Rule | OSHA Outreach requirement |
|---|---|
| Length | 10 or 30 student contact hours |
| Daily limit | No more than 7.5 contact hours per calendar day |
| Minimum days | At least 2 days for 10-hour, at least 4 days for 30-hour |
| Completion window | Within 180 days |
| Testing | Optional; set by the trainer or provider |
Breaks and optional tests do not count toward contact hours, so the exam is extra time on top of the training.
Construction Course
The construction course centers on the Focus Four hazards that cause most construction deaths: falls, struck-by, caught-in or -between and electrocution. It also covers personal protective equipment, health hazards such as silica and noise, scaffolds, excavations, cranes and materials handling. An OSHA 30 construction practice test should weight the Focus Four heavily.
General Industry Course
The general industry course covers walking-working surfaces, exit routes and emergency action plans, fire protection, electrical safety, hazard communication, machine guarding, personal protective equipment and materials handling. An OSHA 30 general industry practice test should include plenty of hazard communication and machine guarding questions.
Is the OSHA 30 Test Multiple Choice
Most OSHA 30 final exams are multiple choice, often with true-or-false items mixed in, but the format is the provider’s choice. Expect short scenarios that ask you to spot a hazard, pick the right protective equipment or name a worker right.
Scoring and Retakes
OSHA does not set a fixed passing score or retake rule for the final exam. Each trainer or authorized online provider sets its own pass mark and the number of attempts allowed, and will tell you what happens if you run out of attempts. Check those rules before you start the final module.
Is OSHA 30 hard to pass? Not for students who complete every module attentively, because the questions follow the course closely. Our OSHA 10 practice test uses a 70% readiness benchmark, clearly labelled as a benchmark, so you can check your knowledge against a reasonable target.
Taking OSHA 30 Online and Fees
Yes, OSHA 30 can be done online, but only through an OSHA-authorized online provider. OSHA lists the authorized providers on its Outreach pages, and courses from anyone else do not lead to an official completion card. Check that list before you pay.
Fees are set by each provider and trainer, so there is no single national price. Many employers and unions pay for the training or offer it in-house.
How Long Is the OSHA 30 Test
The final exam’s length is set by your provider, but the course around it follows OSHA’s time rules. An online OSHA 30 class allows no more than 7.5 contact hours per day, so it takes at least four days, and it must be finished within 180 days. An OSHA 10 class takes at least two days.
How to Prepare for the OSHA Final Exam
The best way to pass the OSHA 30 test is to study as you go rather than at the end. Short reviews after each module keep the material fresh for the final exam.
- Take notes on each module, especially lists such as the Focus Four and PPE types.
- Answer the module quizzes honestly before looking anything up.
- Turn key terms into cards and make flashcards online to review them.
- Take a full practice test before the final exam and review every explanation.
- Go back to the modules for any topic you missed.

Fastest Way to Complete OSHA 30
There is no shortcut through the hours: OSHA requires the full 30 contact hours, at no more than 7.5 hours per day, so the fastest way to complete OSHA 30 is about four days of steady work. What you can speed up is the exam. Plan your days with the study planner for exams and review as you go so you pass the final on the first attempt.
Test Day Checklist
Here is how to take the OSHA 30 test with fewer surprises:
- Confirm your provider is on OSHA’s list of authorized online providers.
- Check the exam rules: number of questions, time limit, passing score and attempts.
- Finish every required module; the exam usually unlocks only after the course.
- Use a reliable device and internet connection, and close other tabs.
- Read each scenario carefully and eliminate clearly unsafe answers first.
- Save your completion confirmation and note when your card should arrive.
Our guide to test taking strategies covers pacing and elimination techniques in more detail. Set a deadline with the exam countdown if your employer needs the card by a certain date.
OSHA 10 vs OSHA 30
OSHA 10 is entry-level hazard awareness for workers, while OSHA 30 is broader training for supervisors and workers with safety responsibility. An OSHA 10 and 30 practice test covers the overlapping core topics.
| OSHA 10 | OSHA 30 | |
|---|---|---|
| Audience | Entry-level workers | Supervisors and workers with safety duties |
| Contact hours | 10 | 30 |
| Minimum days | 2 | 4 |
| Coverage | Worker rights, hazard recognition, PPE, focus hazards | Same topics in more depth, plus more standards |
| Card | Completion card, not a certification | Completion card, not a certification |
If you are new to a job site, OSHA 10 is usually the right start. If you lead a crew or a team, OSHA 30 is the usual choice. Workers who also drive commercial vehicles may need to prepare for the CDL test as well, and food service workers often need the food handlers test.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the OSHA 30 Test Timed?
It depends on your trainer or OSHA-authorized online provider, because OSHA does not set a time limit for the final exam. The course itself is timed: online classes are limited to 7.5 contact hours per day, so a 30-hour class takes at least four days. Check your provider’s rules for any exam clock.
Is the OSHA 30 Test Open Book?
OSHA does not set a single rule, so whether notes are allowed depends on your trainer or online provider. Many online final exams are taken without a proctor, but they draw on the course modules you must complete first. Assume it is closed book and prepare as if you cannot look anything up.
How Hard Is the OSHA 30 Test?
The OSHA 30 test is not hard for students who work through every module carefully. The questions check hazard recognition, worker rights and the standards covered in class, often as short scenarios. The challenge is the volume of material over 30 hours, so regular review and practice questions help more than cramming.
How Many Questions Are on the OSHA 30 Final Exam?
OSHA does not set a fixed number of questions for the OSHA 30 final exam. Testing is optional under the Outreach Training Program rules, and each trainer or authorized online provider decides the length and passing score of its own exam. Your provider’s course page or syllabus lists the exact format.
