How Our Free CompTIA Security+ Practice Test Works

Our free CompTIA Security+ practice test draws questions at random from an original bank written for the SY0-701 objectives. Each session mixes all five domains, so you get a fresh set every time instead of a fixed list you could memorize.

Choose a question count (10, 30 or the full bank) and a mode, then start. When you submit, you see your score, percentage, time used and a breakdown by domain. The answer review shows every question with your answer, the correct answer, an explanation and a “why” note on the wrong options.

Take the CompTIA Security+ Practice Test Online Free

The test runs online and free in any modern browser on a phone, tablet or computer, with no sign-up and no download. You can flag questions, jump between them and answer with the keyboard. If you close the page mid-test, your progress is saved on your device so you can resume, and your last ten results are kept to track progress.

Timed CompTIA Security+ Mock Test Free Mode

Timed mode turns the practice test into a free CompTIA Security+ mock test: 30 minutes for 30 questions, the same pace as 90 questions in 90 minutes on the real exam. Untimed mode removes the clock, and study mode shows the answer and explanation after each question.

What the Real SY0-701 Exam Covers

The real SY0-701 exam has a maximum of 90 questions in 90 minutes across five domains, with multiple-choice and performance-based questions. Our CompTIA Security+ practice test for SY0-701 follows the same domains:

Domain Weight Key topics
General Security Concepts 12% Control types, CIA triad, zero trust, change management, cryptography
Threats, Vulnerabilities, and Mitigations 22% Threat actors, attack vectors, vulnerabilities, indicators, mitigations
Security Architecture 18% Architecture models, infrastructure, data protection, resilience
Security Operations 28% Hardening, vulnerability management, monitoring, IAM, incident response
Security Program Management and Oversight 20% Governance, risk, third parties, compliance, audits, awareness

Domain 1 Practice Test: General Security Concepts

Domain 1 questions test the vocabulary the rest of the exam builds on. A typical item describes a legacy device that cannot be patched and is isolated on its own network segment, and asks what type of control the isolation is. The answer is a compensating control, because it stands in for the patch that cannot be applied.

PBQ Practice: Performance-Based Questions

The real exam includes performance-based questions, such as configuring firewall rules or matching attacks to log entries. Our test does not simulate those interactive tasks. Instead, its multi-step scenario questions and multiple-answer items practise the same reasoning, so you are not seeing the concepts for the first time on exam day.

How CompTIA Security+ Practice Test Questions Are Scored

The real Security+ exam uses a scaled score from 100 to 900 with a passing score of 750, and CompTIA does not publish a percentage equivalent. Our CompTIA Security+ practice test questions are therefore scored against a 75% readiness benchmark, labeled as a benchmark on the results screen.

Each question is worth one point, and multiple-answer questions count only when every correct option is selected. Pay most attention to the domain breakdown. Security Operations carries 28% of the real exam, so a weak score there matters more than a weak score in Domain 1.

Tips to Pass Security+ in 2026

Candidates who pass Security+ in 2026 combine domain-by-domain study with regular practice. Keep an eye on versions too: CompTIA has announced a V8 exam for around November 17, 2026, while the English SY0-701 remains available until June 11, 2027. Make sure your material matches the exam you book.

  1. Take an untimed baseline test to find your weakest domains.
  2. Study them with the CompTIA Security+ exam guide and your course material.
  3. Take new random sets in study mode, then switch to timed mode in the final two weeks.
  4. Plan your weeks with the study planner and count down to exam day with the exam countdown.

CompTIA Security+ Practice Questions and Answers

Treat CompTIA Security+ practice questions and answers as a learning tool. Read the explanation for every question, including the ones you got right, because many Security+ items hinge on why one good answer is better than another. A PDF of questions with explanations is fine for reading offline, but it cannot time or score you.

Review Every CompTIA Security Plus Practice Test Miss

After each CompTIA Security Plus practice test, list the topic of every miss and review it before your next attempt. Acronyms cause many misses, so drill them with the CompTIA A+ flashcards and your own deck of Security+ terms. For broader practice, try the CompTIA A+ practice test, the CompTIA Network+ practice test or the AWS Cloud Practitioner practice exam.

CompTIA Security+ Practice Test FAQ

How Much Is a CompTIA Security+ Practice Test?

This CompTIA Security+ practice test is free, with no account, trial or payment. Official CompTIA practice products and many third-party question banks are paid, and prices vary by product and bundle. A free test is a good way to measure your starting point before deciding whether you need paid material.

How Many Questions Are on the CompTIA Security+ Exam?

The SY0-701 exam has a maximum of 90 questions with a 90-minute time limit, including multiple-choice and performance-based questions. Our timed mode follows the same pace of one minute per question, so a 30-question set takes 30 minutes, and you can also choose the full question bank.

How Many Questions Can You Miss on the CompTIA Security+ Exam?

There is no fixed number. Security+ uses a scaled score from 100 to 900 and you need 750 to pass, and CompTIA does not publish how that converts to a count of correct answers. Our practice test uses a 75% readiness benchmark, so aim to beat it on several random sets.

Is the CompTIA Security+ Exam Hard?

It is moderately hard. Questions are scenario-based, several answers can look correct, and the passing score of 750 is higher than for A+ or Network+. Candidates with some IT or networking background who practise regularly and review every explanation usually pass on the first attempt.

Can You Take the CompTIA Security+ Exam Online?

Yes. Pearson VUE offers the Security+ exam with online remote proctoring as well as at test centers. For the online option you need a private room, a clear desk, a webcam, a stable connection and a computer that passes the system check. The exam and scoring are the same either way.

How Many Times Can You Take the CompTIA Security+ Exam?

You can retake Security+ if you do not pass, but each attempt needs a new voucher, and CompTIA's retake policy sets a waiting period after repeated attempts. Check the current policy on the CompTIA website, and use your score report to target weak objectives before rebooking.
