What Is the CompTIA Network+

CompTIA Network+ is a vendor-neutral certification for early-career networking roles such as network support technician, junior network administrator and NOC technician. It shows that you understand how networks are built, secured and kept running, regardless of which vendor’s equipment an employer uses.

The current exam is N10-009 (V9), which launched on June 20, 2024. The certification is valid for three years from the date you pass, and you renew it through CompTIA’s Continuing Education program. Network+ has no formal prerequisites, but CompTIA recommends A+ certification and 9 to 12 months of hands-on experience in a junior network administrator or network support technician role. It usually follows CompTIA A+ and comes before CompTIA Security+ on the CompTIA pathway.

CompTIA Network+ Certification Practice Test Path

A sensible path is to learn the five domains, check each one with a CompTIA Network+ practice test, then finish with timed full-length sets. Start with one untimed baseline test so you know where you stand before you spend weeks on topics you already know.

If you are deciding between vendor-neutral and vendor-specific study, compare Network+ with Cisco CCNA. Network+ is broader and less configuration-heavy, while CCNA goes deeper into Cisco routing and switching. Both are listed on our IT certifications hub.

CompTIA Network+ N10-009 Exam Format

The N10-009 exam has a maximum of 90 questions and a 90-minute time limit. Question types are multiple choice (single and multiple answer), drag-and-drop and performance-based questions that simulate a networking task.

Fact N10-009
Questions Up to 90
Time 90 minutes
Score range 100–900 (scaled)
Passing score 720
Domains 5
Validity 3 years

Any CompTIA Network+ practice tests for exam N10-009 should follow these five domains. Material written for the previous N10-008 exam overlaps, but it misses some current objectives and weights topics differently.

CompTIA Network+ Exam Topics

The five N10-009 domains and their weightings are:

  • Networking Concepts (23%): the OSI model, network appliances, cloud concepts, ports and protocols, traffic types, topologies and IPv4 addressing.
  • Network Implementation (20%): routing and switching technologies, wireless devices and physical installation.
  • Network Operations (19%): documentation, monitoring, disaster recovery, network services and access and management methods.
  • Network Security (14%): security concepts, attack types, and hardening and defense techniques.
  • Network Troubleshooting (24%): troubleshooting methodology, cabling issues, network services, performance problems and tools.

Troubleshooting and networking concepts together make up almost half the exam. Subnetting, port numbers and the OSI layers appear across several domains, so learn them early.

CompTIA Network+ Exam Sample Questions

A typical concept question asks which port a protocol uses, such as HTTPS on TCP 443 or DNS on port 53. A typical troubleshooting question describes a user who can reach local resources but not the internet and asks for the most likely cause, such as an incorrect default gateway.

Performance-based questions go further. You might match cable types to scenarios, place devices in a network diagram or interpret command output from tools such as ping, tracert or nslookup.

Security and operations questions are usually short scenarios. For example, a company wants to stop unknown laptops from joining the wired network in its lobby, and you must pick the best control, such as port security or 802.1X authentication. Another asks which backup site lets a business resume operations fastest after an outage, where the answer is a hot site.

CompTIA Network+ Scoring

CompTIA Network+ uses a scaled score from 100 to 900, and you need 720 to pass. Because the score is scaled, there is no fixed percentage of correct answers that guarantees a pass.

You receive your result at the end of the exam, along with a score report that lists the objectives where you missed questions. If you need to retake the exam, that report tells you exactly what to study. Our practice test uses a 75% readiness benchmark, labeled as a benchmark rather than an official cutoff.

Unanswered questions are scored as wrong, so a blank answer can only cost you. If time runs short, make your best guess on the remaining questions rather than leaving them empty, and use the flag feature to revisit uncertain answers only if time allows.

How to Take the CompTIA Network+ Exam: Registration and Fees

You take the CompTIA Network+ exam by buying a voucher and booking a session with Pearson VUE, either at a test center or online with a remote proctor. The US retail exam voucher costs $399. CompTIA offers student discounts and bundles, so check the CompTIA Store for the current price before you buy.

  1. Create a CompTIA account and a Pearson VUE profile that matches your ID exactly.
  2. Buy an N10-009 exam voucher.
  3. Choose a test center or online delivery and book a date.
  4. For online testing, run the system check on the computer you will use.

The official requirements are on the CompTIA Network+ certification page.

How to Prepare With a CompTIA Network+ Practice Test

The best preparation pairs study of each domain with a CompTIA Network+ practice test that shows whether the knowledge stuck. Most candidates with A+ level knowledge need six to eight weeks at 8 to 10 hours a week:

Week Focus
1 Baseline practice test, OSI model, ports and protocols
2 IPv4 addressing and subnetting, IPv6 basics
3 Routing, switching, VLANs and wireless
4 Network operations: monitoring, documentation, recovery
5 Network security: attacks, hardening, access control
6 Troubleshooting methodology and command-line tools
7–8 Timed full-length practice and review of weak domains

Build a dated version of this plan with the study planner and count down to your booking with the exam countdown.

Is the Network+ Exam Hard

The Network+ exam is harder than A+ for most people because it tests understanding rather than recall. You need to reason through scenarios, such as why two hosts on different VLANs cannot communicate, rather than simply recognize a term.

The hardest areas are usually subnetting, troubleshooting questions with several plausible answers and performance-based tasks under time pressure. Daily subnetting drills and regular timed practice make the biggest difference.

CompTIA Network+ Practice Questions

Use CompTIA Network+ practice questions in two ways. Early on, answer them in study mode and read every explanation. Closer to the exam, take timed sets and aim to score well above the 75% benchmark on several random sets in a row.

Our bank includes a mix of concept, implementation and troubleshooting questions in all five domains. Acronyms are a large part of the exam, and our CompTIA A+ flashcards cover many terms that carry over to Network+, such as DHCP, DNS, VLAN and SSID.

CompTIA Network+ Sample Questions PDF

A CompTIA Network+ sample questions PDF is useful for offline reading, and CompTIA publishes the N10-009 exam objectives as a free download on its website. The limitation of any PDF is that it cannot time you, score you or change the question order.

Use the objectives PDF as a checklist and online practice for scored sessions. Mark each objective as you study it so nothing is missed.

CompTIA Network+ Test Day Checklist

Run through this checklist before your exam:

  • Bring a valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID with a name that matches your registration.
  • Arrive early at the test center, or start online check-in early to allow for the room scan.
  • For online testing, clear your desk, close all other applications and keep your phone out of reach.
  • Write down subnet ranges or port numbers on the provided whiteboard or scratch tool if allowed, not on your own paper.
  • Flag time-consuming performance-based questions and return to them at the end.
  • Answer every question, because a blank answer earns no points.
  • Keep to roughly one minute per question across the 90 minutes.

CompTIA Network+ FAQ

Is the CompTIA Network+ Exam Hard?

The CompTIA Network+ exam is considered moderately hard, a clear step up from A+. It expects you to understand how networks behave, not just name components, and the troubleshooting domain carries the most weight. Candidates with A+ knowledge or some hands-on networking, plus steady practice-test work, usually pass on the first attempt.

How Many Questions Are on the CompTIA Network+ Exam?

The CompTIA Network+ N10-009 exam has a maximum of 90 questions, and you have 90 minutes to finish. Questions are a mix of multiple choice, drag-and-drop and performance-based tasks. The exact number on your exam form can be slightly lower than 90, so pace yourself at about one minute per question.

Are CompTIA Practice Exams Free?

Some CompTIA practice exams are free and others are paid. CompTIA sells official practice products, and independent sites offer free questions. Our CompTIA Network+ practice test is free with no account, covers all five N10-009 domains and explains every answer, so it is a useful first check before you spend money on more material.

Are CompTIA Practice Exams Worth It?

Yes, practice exams are worth it because they show which domains cost you points and build the pacing you need for 90 questions in 90 minutes. They work best when you take fresh random sets, review every explanation and study the weak domains between attempts rather than repeating one test.
