Free IQ Test
Take our free IQ test of original reasoning puzzles: pattern matrices, number series, analogies, logic and spatial items. You get instant free results with no sign-up or email. Your result is the percentage you answered correctly, a practice measure of reasoning skill, not a standardized IQ score or a clinical assessment.
Practice reasoning test, not a clinical IQ score
These original puzzles practise the reasoning skills used in IQ-style tests. Your result is a percentage of correct answers — it is not a standardized IQ score and is not normed against any population.
You have an unfinished test.

How to Take the IQ Test for Free Online
To take the IQ test for free online, pick a mode and a question count above, press start and answer each puzzle. Each attempt draws questions at random from our bank of 75 original reasoning items, so a second attempt is not a copy of the first.
- Choose a mode. Timed mode gives you 30 minutes for 30 questions, untimed mode removes the clock, and study mode shows the answer and explanation after each question.
- Choose how many questions you want: 10, 30 or all 75.
- Work through the puzzles. You can flag a question, skip ahead and come back with the question navigator.
- Submit to see your percentage correct, your time and a breakdown by question type.
If you close the page halfway through, your unfinished test is saved on your device and you can resume it later. Your last ten results are kept in your browser so you can track progress.
IQ Test Instant Results Free
Results appear instantly when you submit, and they are free. You see your score as a percentage, the number of questions answered correctly and a section breakdown across pattern matrices, number series, verbal analogies, logical deduction, spatial reasoning and working memory-style items.
The answer review lists every question with your answer, the correct answer, an explanation and a “why” note that shows the rule behind the puzzle. Reading the why notes is the fastest way to get better at this kind of reasoning.

What Is an IQ Test
An IQ test is a standardized assessment of reasoning and problem-solving ability, scored by comparing your performance with a large sample of people of the same age. IQ stands for intelligence quotient. Professional tests combine several subtests, such as vocabulary, matrix reasoning, arithmetic, working memory and processing speed.
Our free IQ test practises the reasoning parts of that mix with original puzzles. It is useful for curiosity, for warming up before an employer’s cognitive assessment and for learning how matrix and series questions work. It is not a clinical tool and cannot diagnose anything.
How the IQ Test Scale Works
The IQ test scale used by modern tests is a deviation scale: the average score for each age group is set at 100 and the standard deviation at 15. This is the convention used by the Wechsler scales and the current Stanford-Binet. A score therefore tells you how far above or below the average of your age group you performed.
An online test like ours is an estimate of reasoning practice, not a placement on this scale. Because our items are not normed against a population, we report percent correct and never convert it into an IQ number.
The IQ Test Bell Curve
Scores on a standardized IQ test follow a bell curve, also called a normal distribution. Most people score near the middle, and the further a score is from 100, the rarer it becomes. Because the standard deviation is 15, the curve has fixed proportions:
- About 68% of people score between 85 and 115.
- About 95% of people score between 70 and 130.
- A score of 130 on an IQ test is two standard deviations above average, roughly the top 2%.
Range for IQ Test Scores
The range for IQ test scores is usually described in bands. Labels differ slightly between test publishers, so treat these as a general guide rather than official categories:
| Score range | Common description |
|---|---|
| 130 and above | Very superior or extremely high |
| 115–129 | Above average |
| 85–114 | Average |
| 70–84 | Below average |
| Below 70 | Very low, interpreted only by a qualified professional |
IQ Test Average and What Your Score Means
The IQ test average is 100 by design, because each test is scaled so that the middle of its norm group lands on 100. Half of people score above it and half below. A single score is best read as a range, since every test has a margin of error.
IQ Test Average Score
The IQ test average score of 100 is not a passing grade or a target. Anything from 85 to 115 is considered average. On our practice test the comparable question is personal: is your percentage correct rising from attempt to attempt, and which question types still slow you down?
What Is Genius on an IQ Test
There is no official genius score on an IQ test. The word is a popular label, not a scientific category. Scores of 130 and above are often described as very superior, and high-IQ societies such as Mensa admit people who score in the top 2% on an approved, supervised test.
IQ Test by Mensa, Wechsler and Stanford-Binet
The IQ tests professionals rely on are individually administered and carefully normed. The Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) and the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC) are the most widely used. The Stanford-Binet is another long-established test. An IQ test by Mensa is a supervised admission test, and Mensa also accepts qualifying scores from certain other approved tests.
These tests are given by trained examiners and cannot be replicated by a free online quiz. Our puzzles resemble the matrix, series and analogy items they include, which makes them good practice for the format.
IQ Test vs Aptitude Test
An IQ test aims to measure general reasoning ability, while an aptitude test measures skills needed for a specific job or training program. Employers use a pre-employment aptitude test with numerical, verbal and logical sections. You can practise these with our aptitude test practice, our numerical reasoning test and our mechanical aptitude test.
The same comparison applies to IQ test vs ASVAB. The ASVAB is a military aptitude battery whose AFQT score is a percentile, not an IQ. If you are preparing for enlistment, the ASVAB practice test is the better tool.
IQ Test Validity and Reliability
IQ test validity and reliability are the two qualities that separate professional tests from online quizzes. Reliability means a person scores similarly when tested again. Validity means the test measures what it claims and predicts related outcomes. Major IQ tests publish evidence for both, gathered from large norm samples.
Free online tests, including ours, have neither a norm sample nor published validity studies, so their results should never be used for school placement, hiring or any diagnosis. If test nerves affect your performance, our test anxiety test offers a short self-reflection, and a qualified professional can help if anxiety is persistent.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Does IQ Test Stand For?
IQ stands for intelligence quotient. The name comes from early tests that divided a child's mental age by their actual age and multiplied by 100. Modern tests no longer use that division. They compare your performance with people of the same age and express the result on a scale with an average of 100.
What Is a Good Score for an IQ Test?
On a standardized test, any score from 85 to 115 is in the average range, where about two-thirds of people fall. Scores above 115 are above average and 130 or higher is about the top 2%. On our free practice test there is no IQ score: a good result is simply a higher percentage correct than your last attempt.
What Is My IQ?
Only a standardized test given under controlled conditions, usually by a licensed psychologist, can estimate your IQ. Our free IQ test does not calculate one, because its items are not normed against a population. It shows the percentage of reasoning puzzles you solved and which question types you find easiest and hardest.
Are IQ Tests Accurate?
Professionally developed IQ tests such as the Wechsler scales are highly reliable, meaning people get similar scores when retested. They still carry a margin of error, and a score reflects performance on one day. Free online quizzes, including ours, are not normed, so they cannot give an accurate IQ number.
Can IQ Test Scores Change?
Yes, IQ scores can change, especially in childhood and adolescence, when they are less stable than in adulthood. Education, health, test conditions and familiarity with the item types all influence results. Practice also improves scores on puzzle-style tests, which is one reason official tests limit how often you can retake them.
How Long Does an IQ Test Take?
Our free IQ test takes 30 minutes in timed mode for 30 questions, or you can run a 10-question set in about 10 minutes. Clinical IQ tests are given one-on-one by a psychologist and take considerably longer, because they include many different subtests, some of them spoken or hands-on.
Can an IQ Test Be Taken Online?
You can take IQ-style reasoning tests online, like this one, for practice and curiosity. A recognized IQ score, however, comes from a standardized test administered under controlled conditions. Organizations such as Mensa accept scores only from approved, supervised tests, not from free online quizzes.
