What Is the SIE Exam
The SIE exam is FINRA’s Securities Industry Essentials exam, an introductory test of basic securities industry knowledge. It covers market structure, products and their risks, trading and customer accounts, prohibited activities and the regulatory framework. It is the first step toward most FINRA representative registrations.
FINRA introduced the SIE so that people could show industry knowledge before they are hired. That makes it popular with college students, career changers and new employees who want to stand out to broker-dealers.
What Does the SIE Exam Allow You to Do
On its own, passing the SIE does not let you sell securities or act as a registered representative. It is a corequisite: to register, you must also pass a representative-level qualification exam, such as the Series 7 exam, and be associated with a FINRA member firm.
What the SIE does is prove to employers that you already know the basics. It also shortens the path to registration, because representative exams build on SIE content instead of repeating it.
SIE Exam Requirements
The SIE exam has very few requirements:
- You must be at least 18 years old.
- You do not need to be associated with or sponsored by a firm.
- There are no education or experience requirements.
- You must enroll through FINRA and pay the exam fee.
SIE Exam Format
The SIE exam is a single computer-based test of 85 multiple-choice questions taken in 1 hour 45 minutes. Questions are drawn from four content sections defined in FINRA’s content outline.
How Many Questions Are on the SIE Exam
There are 75 scored questions on the SIE exam, plus 5 unscored pretest questions, for 80 in total. The pretest items are mixed in and look exactly like scored ones. With 105 minutes for 80 questions, you have about 1 minute 19 seconds per question.
The Four Content Sections
If you are wondering what to study for the SIE exam, the content outline answers it. FINRA weights the four sections as follows:
| Section | Weight | Scored questions |
|---|---|---|
| Knowledge of Capital Markets | 16% | 12 |
| Understanding Products and Their Risks | 44% | 33 |
| Understanding Trading, Customer Accounts and Prohibited Activities | 31% | 23 |
| Overview of the Regulatory Framework | 9% | 7 |
Products and their risks is by far the largest section. It covers equities, debt securities, options, packaged products such as mutual funds and variable annuities, and the investment risks of each. Trading, accounts and prohibited activities covers order types, settlement, account registrations, anti-money laundering rules and practices such as insider trading and churning.
Is the SIE Exam Multiple Choice
Yes, the SIE exam is entirely multiple choice. Each question has one best answer, and many are short scenarios that ask what a customer, firm or representative should do. There are no written answers or simulations.
SIE Exam Scoring
You need a score of 70 on a 0–100 scale to pass the SIE exam. FINRA scales scores so that every version of the exam is equally difficult, so 70 is a passing standard rather than a simple count of correct answers.
How hard is it to pass the SIE exam? The scaled score means you cannot pass by guessing your way through difficult sections. Candidates who score consistently above 70 on timed practice, with no weak section, are in a strong position.
How Many Times Can You Take the SIE Exam
There is no lifetime limit on SIE attempts, but FINRA enforces waiting periods after a failed attempt. After a first or second failure you must wait 30 days before retaking the exam. After three or more failures in a row, the wait is 180 days. You pay the fee again for each attempt.
Registration and Fees
The SIE exam fee is $100. You enroll through FINRA’s online system, pay the fee and receive an enrollment window during which you schedule your appointment with Prometric. If a firm employs you, it may enroll you and pay instead.
Can You Take the SIE Exam Online
Yes. FINRA allows the SIE to be taken online with remote proctoring, as well as at Prometric test centers. Online testing needs a quiet private room, a compatible computer with a webcam and a clear desk. The proctor checks your room before the exam and watches throughout.
How Often Are SIE Exams Offered
SIE exams are offered year-round. There are no fixed national test dates. You choose any available appointment within your enrollment window, and test center availability depends on location and season.
How to Prepare for the SIE Exam
The surest way to pass the SIE exam is to work through the four sections in order of weight and test yourself regularly with practice questions. A practical plan:
- Take a short SIE practice exam to find your starting point.
- Study products and their risks first, since it is 44% of the exam.
- Move on to trading, customer accounts and prohibited activities.
- Cover capital markets and the regulatory framework.
- Finish with timed full-length practice and review every explanation.

How Long to Study for the SIE Exam
Most candidates study for three to six weeks, about 40 to 60 hours. If you are studying finance or already work in the industry, two to three weeks of focused review may be enough. Use the exam countdown to keep your remaining time visible.
Take an SIE Practice Exam
Yes, there are SIE practice exams, and they are the best way to check readiness. Our free SIE practice exam draws original SIE exam practice questions from all four sections, offers timed, untimed and study modes and explains every answer. Learn terms such as bond types and order types with spaced repetition when you make flashcards online.
Test Day Checklist
The SIE exam is proctored either in person at a Prometric center or online by a live remote proctor. Prepare for both with this checklist:
- Bring valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID whose name matches your enrollment.
- For a test center, arrive early. For online testing, start check-in early and clear your desk and room.
- Keep phones, watches and notes out of reach. Calculators and scratch material follow FINRA and Prometric rules.
- Plan for the full 1 hour 45 minutes and pace yourself at roughly a minute per question.
- Answer every question and flag uncertain ones for review.
SIE Exam vs Series 7
The SIE tests general securities knowledge, while the Series 7 tests the job of a general securities representative in depth. You need both to register as a General Securities Representative.
| Feature | SIE Exam | Series 7 |
|---|---|---|
| Scored questions | 75 | 125 |
| Time | 1 hour 45 minutes | 3 hours 45 minutes |
| Passing score | 70 | 72 |
| Fee | $100 | $395 |
| Sponsorship | Not required | Required |
Most candidates take the SIE first, then move on to the Series 7 once they join a firm. When you reach that stage, try our Series 7 practice exam. For other licensing and professional exams, see our finance certifications.
Frequently Asked Questions
How Hard Is the SIE Exam?
The SIE exam is moderately hard: it is shorter and broader than the Series 7, but it assumes no industry experience, so the vocabulary is new for many candidates. The biggest section, products and their risks, carries 44% of the questions. Candidates who study consistently for a few weeks and practise with timed questions usually pass.
Does the SIE Exam Expire?
Yes. A passing SIE result is valid for four years. Within that window you must pass a representative-level exam, such as the Series 7, and register with a firm. If four years pass without that, you need to retake the SIE. Once you are registered, the SIE stays valid while you remain registered.
How Long Is the SIE Exam Good For?
A passing SIE result is good for four years from the date you pass. That gives you time to find a sponsoring firm and pass a qualification exam such as the Series 7. Plan ahead if you are a student, because the clock starts on your exam date, not on your graduation or hire date.
Is the SIE Exam Free?
No. The SIE exam costs $100, paid when you enroll through FINRA. Some employers reimburse the fee for new hires. Preparation can be free, though: our SIE practice exam costs nothing, and FINRA publishes the content outline you can use as a study checklist.
How Long Does It Take to Pass the SIE Exam?
Most candidates need about three to six weeks of regular study to pass the SIE exam, often 40 to 60 hours in total. Finance students may need less. The exam itself takes 1 hour 45 minutes, and you see a preliminary pass or fail result on screen when you finish.
